Purchase, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz earned a 2-0 win on the road over Manhattanville Saturday.
The Hawks improved to 3-1-2 overall with the victory, while the Valiants dropped to 2-4-1.
Bryan Lizama and
Kieran Weber netted goals in the 41st and 73rd minutes, respectively, to help push SUNY New Paltz to its first win since its opening weekend.
The momentum carried over from Wednesday night's exciting come-from-behind 3-3 tie on the road against Vassar where the Hawks scored all three of their goals in the final 14 minutes of play to come away with a point against the Brewers. They were on the front foot from the opening whistle Saturday afternoon against Manhattanville, as
Ryan Zindler put the visitors first shot on frame just 20 seconds into the game resulting in three consecutive set-piece opportunities for SUNY New Paltz within the first minute of action.
The Hawks continued controlling possession in their offensive half and earned two more corners in the seventh minute, resulting in an attempt by
Colin Brant — who was instrumental in igniting the rally against the Brewers three days prior — but his strike was saved by Valiants keeper AJ Lucas.
Brant led the way with three shots in the half with SUNY New Paltz earning nine corners in the opening 45 minutes alone, but it wasn't until the 41st where the Hawks finally found the back of the net following a foul in the box that resulted in a penalty kick opportunity. Lizama stepped up to take the pk and neatly tucked away his second of the season to put his team up, 1-0.
The second half was even more dominant for SUNY New Paltz, out-shooting Manhattanville, 16-1 in the half, while earning five more corners and ultimately put away the insurance goal in the 73rd thanks to Weber on an assist from Zindler.
Brant finished with a team-high six shots, two on target, in 54 minutes, followed by Weber and Zindler who each had two in 73 and 80 minutes of action, respectively. Defenders
Samuel Snider and
Ryan Bochenski, who each had a shot on the day as well, were the only field players to log all 90 minutes for the Hawks with
Matt Katz playing the full 90 in net and registering three stops.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday when it hosts Stevens at 4 p.m. on South Turf Field.
