Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz earned a 7-0 sweep over hosting Plattsburgh Saturday to open up conference play.
The three-time defending champs kicked off its last season in the SUNYAC in convincing fashion, not dropping a single set and conceding just seven points total in a dominant effort.
"A very dominant performance in the start of our first conference match," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Rob Bruley. "We dominated both the singles and doubles, setting us up nicely in our quest to defend our conference championship. It was very much a team performance today and everyone played to their best of their abilities."
SUNY New Paltz rolled through doubles play, as the duo of
Justine Stanejko and
Sam Ostrander won 6-1 after
Olivia Kunz and
Patrycja Filonik swept twos, 6-0.
Angelica Gabriel and
Nina Genzone then secured a 6-1 victory at third doubles.
Sydney Sladicka made quick work of a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles before Ostrander defeated the Cardinals' Ava Carey, 6-0, 6-1 at second singles. Filonik was the third to earn the win for the Hawks, defeating Kristy Cantwell, 6-0, 6-1.
Lula Brown-Vann won handily, 6-0, 6-0 at fives before Stanejko continued her SUNYAC dominance at first singles, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Alex Krol then capped the sweep for SUNY New Paltz, winning 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.
The Hawks are on short rest, coming home before heading across the river Sunday to compete in the annual Vassar Scramble starting at 9 a.m.
