NEW PALTZ, NY – The State University of New York New Paltz women's soccer team delivered an impressive offensive showing Wednesday afternoon, scoring three second-half goals to secure a commanding 4-0 shutout victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent William Paterson University on South Turf Field.
The Hawks (7-6 overall, 3-4 NJAC) saw four different players find the back of the net, led by junior captain Abby Macleod, who registered a game-high four points on one goal and two assists. Senior Erin Savarese opened the scoring before Jamie Seccafico, Macleod and senior Grace Norelius added to the advantage in the second half, helping SUNY New Paltz secure its third conference victory of the season.
SUNY New Paltz nearly broke through in the opening minute, as Jamie Seccafico created an immediate scoring opportunity just 48 seconds after kickoff. Seccafico's attempt ricocheted off the post and rolled across the goal line, narrowly missing the opening tally before a William Paterson defender cleared the ball away at the last possible moment.
Despite the early missed opportunity, the Hawks maintained their attacking pressure and found their breakthrough in the 13th minute. Macleod connected with senior Erin Savarese at the 12:24 mark, setting up the midfielder for her second goal of the season and giving SUNY New Paltz a 1-0 advantage.
The Hawks continued pushing forward following the opening tally, repeatedly testing the Pioneers' defensive line. Despite being whistled for seven offsides in the opening half, SUNY New Paltz continued looking for opportunities in the attacking third.
William Paterson attempted to answer with opportunities of its own, but the Hawks' defensive unit kept the visitors from registering a shot on target. The Pioneers earned their first corner in the 31st minute, while Mia Dahlhaus recorded another attempt for SUNY New Paltz in the 38th minute.
The Hawks entered halftime holding a 1-0 advantage, with both teams recording three shots through the opening 45 minutes.
William Paterson looked to generate momentum following the break, but SUNY New Paltz remained organized defensively. The Pioneers registered an attempt in the 59th minute and earned a corner shortly afterward, though neither opportunity resulted in an equalizer.
With the contest still separated by one goal, the Hawks began finding more space offensively as the second half progressed.
Macleod forced William Paterson goalkeeper Alessandra Socio into a save in the 66th minute, placing an attempt on frame as SUNY New Paltz searched for some breathing room. The Hawks continued their attack and eventually doubled their advantage less than four minutes later.
At the 69:37 mark, Macleod recorded her second assist in the afternoon, finding Seccafico for her first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
SUNY New Paltz continued applying pressure after the second tally. Macleod registered another attempt in the 72nd minute before putting herself on the scoresheet less than three minutes later.
Norelius connected with Macleod at 74:45, setting up the junior for her team-leading seventh goal of the season and giving the Hawks a commanding 3-0 advantage. The goal marked SUNY New Paltz's second tally in just over five minutes, turning a narrow one-goal contest into a comfortable lead with 15 minutes remaining.
The Hawks' defensive unit continued limiting the Pioneers' chances down the stretch. William Paterson registered its lone shot on goal in the 83rd minute, but junior goalkeeper Jess Centeri was positioned to make the stop and preserve the shutout.
SUNY New Paltz was not finished offensively, creating another opportunity in the closing minutes. Samantha Gemmo sent an attempt high in the 87th minute before helping set up the Hawks' fourth and final goal.
With 2:23 remaining in regulation, Gemmo connected with Norelius, who finished for her third goal of the season to complete the 4-0 victory.
Macleod paced SUNY New Paltz with three shots, two assists and a goal, while Norelius added three points on a goal and an assist. Seccafico registered two shots and her first goal of the year, while Savarese contributed the opening tally.
The Hawks outshot William Paterson 9-5 overall, including a 6-2 advantage in the second half and a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. SUNY New Paltz converted four of its five shots on target, while its defensive unit held the Pioneers to just one attempt on frame throughout the full 90 minutes.
Centeri earned the shutout with one save, backed by a defensive group that included Jess Avila, Zoey Manzo, Kara Jahrsdoerfer and Chiara Rutigliano.
