SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Battles No.10 Rowan on the Road

GLASSBORO, NJ – The State University of New York New Paltz field hockey team traveled on Friday evening for a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup against No. 10 Rowan University, falling to the nationally ranked Profs, 3-0, at Coach Wackar Stadium.

The Hawks (5-11 overall, 2-4 NJAC) entered the contest following a commanding 4-0 shutout victory over William Paterson Wednesday afternoon. Facing an undefeated conference opponent in Rowan (14-3 overall, 6-0 NJAC), SUNY New Paltz held the nationally ranked hosts scoreless through the opening 15 minutes behind a strong defensive effort and an eight-save performance from goalkeeper Grace Grant.

Rowan generated early pressure, testing Grant less than a minute into the contest. The Hawks' goalkeeper was up to the challenge, turning away the opening attempt before the Profs earned their first penalty corner in the fourth minute.

SUNY New Paltz continued to withstand the hosts' offensive pressure throughout the first quarter. Rowan earned three consecutive penalty corners in the final three minutes of the period, but the Hawks kept the Profs off the scoreboard. Grant added another stop with 20 seconds remaining to preserve the scoreless deadlock heading into the second.

Rowan eventually broke through at the 18:34 mark when Sydney Kowalczyk found the back of the cage to put the hosts ahead, 1-0.

Grant responded less than a minute later, denying an attempt from Gracie Merrick as Rowan looked to extend its advantage. The Profs earned two additional penalty corners shortly afterward, but SUNY New Paltz's defense held firm.

The Hawks generated their first penalty corner of the evening in the 26th minute, with senior Maya O'Keefe initiating the opportunity. SUNY New Paltz was unable to produce a shot from the set piece, however, and entered halftime trailing by just one goal.

The third quarter remained tightly contested defensively, with the Hawks limiting Rowan to a single shot throughout the period.

The Profs earned three penalty corners in the opening 10 minutes of the second half before capitalizing on their third opportunity. Paige Gray scored off an assist from Ella Toll at the 39:20 mark, extending Rowan's advantage to 2-0.

Rowan added its final goal less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, as Toll converted at 46:43 following a sequence of penalty corners.

Despite the deficit, SUNY New Paltz continued searching for opportunities in the attacking end. O'Keefe earned another penalty corner in the 49th minute, leading to the Hawks' lone shot of the contest as Joleigh Kozack sent an attempt wide of the cage.

Grant remained active defensively, recording five saves in the final quarter, including consecutive stops early in the period and another denial with less than a minute remaining.

SUNY New Paltz earned its final penalty corner in the 54th minute but could not convert as Rowan held on for the conference victory.

Grant finished with eight saves across the full 60 minutes, anchoring the Hawks' defensive effort against the nationally ranked Profs.
