GALLOWAY, NJ – The State University of New York New Paltz women's soccer team punched its ticket to the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament Saturday afternoon, securing a crucial 1-0 road victory over Stockton University at G. Larry James Stadium to clinch a postseason berth in its inaugural NJAC season.
The Hawks (8-6 overall, 4-4 NJAC) earned their second consecutive shutout victory behind a first-half game-winner from Alyssa Deutsch and another strong defensive performance anchored by junior goalkeeper Jess Centeri. Facing a Stockton squad that entered the afternoon with five conference victories, SUNY New Paltz delivered a pivotal result to secure its place in the conference postseason field.
Stockton opened the afternoon on the offensive, earning the game's first corner kick in the fifth minute before sending two attempts wide of the cage in the opening eight minutes. SUNY New Paltz responded in the 11th minute when Samantha Gemmo registered the Hawks' first shot, sending an attempt just wide of the left post.
The two sides continued battling for possession through the middle stages of the opening half before SUNY New Paltz capitalized on its next attacking opportunity.
In the 27th minute, Kara Jahrsdoerfer delivered a through ball off a set piece to connect with Deutsch, who delivered a shot into the lower right corner of the net at the 26:47 mark. The finish marked Deutsch's first goal of the season and gave the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
Stockton looked to answer just five minutes later, but Centeri turned away an attempt in the 32nd minute to preserve the lead. The Ospreys continued applying pressure, earning a corner in the 36th minute and another in the closing moments of the half, but SUNY New Paltz's back line remained composed to carry its one-goal advantage into the break.
The Hawks entered the second half determined to extend their lead while continuing to limit Stockton's attacking opportunities.
SUNY New Paltz earned a pair of corner kicks in the 58th and 61st minutes, creating a stretch of offensive pressure. Abby Macleod followed with an attempt in the 62nd minute before Jahrsdoerfer sent another shot over the crossbar just eight seconds later.
Stockton quickly responded with an opportunity of its own, but Centeri was there once again, making a save in the 63rd minute to keep the Ospreys off the scoreboard.
Breanna Casey added another attacking opportunity for the Hawks in the 71st minute, sending a shot over the cage as SUNY New Paltz continued searching for an insurance goal.
The Ospreys generated several chances over the final 20 minutes, but the Hawks' defense remained organized. Stockton earned a corner kick in the 83rd minute and followed with a shot that sailed wide of the left post.
With less than three minutes remaining, Centeri delivered another crucial stop in the 88th minute, denying a shot on goal to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Macleod registered the final attempt of the contest with 17 seconds remaining, sending a shot just high and wide as SUNY New Paltz closed out the 1-0 victory.
Deutsch finished with the game-winning goal on her lone shot of the afternoon, while Jahrsdoerfer collected the assist and added a shot of her own. Macleod led the Hawks with two attempts, while Gemmo and Casey each registered one.
Centeri played all 90 minutes between the posts, recording three saves to secure the clean sheet. The Hawks' defensive unit of Jahrsdoerfer, Jess Avila, Zoey Manzo and Chiara Rutigliano helped contain Stockton throughout the afternoon.
The Ospreys held a 10-6 advantage in total shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, but SUNY New Paltz made its lone shot on goal count while keeping the hosts scoreless for the full 90 minutes.
With the victory, SUNY New Paltz improved to 4-4 in NJAC competition and officially clinched a berth in the conference tournament in its first season as a member of the league. The Hawks have now recorded consecutive shutouts against William Paterson and Stockton, carrying momentum into the final stretch of the regular season.
