Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SUNY New Paltz Women's Soccer Edged by Rutgers-Camden on Last Second Goal

CAMDEN, NJ — The State University of New York New Paltz women's soccer team was seconds away from earning a point on the road Saturday afternoon, but Rutgers-Camden found the deciding goal with three seconds remaining to hand the Hawks a 1-0 NJAC loss at Camden Athletic Complex.

SUNY New Paltz created the majority of the opportunities through the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Scarlet Raptors, 7-2, while putting two attempts on frame.

Samantha Gemmo generated the Hawks' first look in the eighth minute and forced the Rutgers-Camden goalkeeper into her first save just over a minute later. Abby Macleod followed with an attempt on frame in the 16th before sending another chance high five minutes later.

The Hawks continued pressing for the opener as Kara Jahrsdoerfer, Macleod and Alyssa Deutsch each recorded attempts before halftime, but the game remained scoreless entering the break.

Rutgers-Camden found more of the ball in the attacking end to begin the second half. Junior goalkeeper Jess Centeri denied two of the hosts' leading scorers, stopping Ava Stowell in the 48th minute before turning away Gianna Simon's attempt in the 62nd to preserve the scoreless tie.

Neither side found a breakthrough as the game moved into its final minutes. SUNY New Paltz finished with four second-half shots, while Centeri and the Hawks' back line kept the Scarlet Raptors off the board through nearly the full 90.

With overtime no longer in play during the regular season, the game appeared headed for a scoreless draw before Rutgers-Camden produced one final opportunity. Ava Stowell connected with Simon, who scored at 89:57 to give the Scarlet Raptors the 1-0 victory.

SUNY New Paltz finished with an 11-6 advantage in shots, while each team placed four attempts on goal. Rutgers-Camden held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Macleod led the Hawks with four shots, including one on goal, while Deutsch added three attempts. Gemmo recorded two shots with one on frame and Breanna Casey added another shot on goal; Centeri made three saves in the loss.
