Parker's Late Winner Sends SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Past Kean and Into NJAC Semifinals

UNION, NJ – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team kept its postseason run alive Monday evening, taking down fourth-seeded Kean University, 2-1, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament quarterfinals behind a dramatic fourth-quarter game-winner from Caydence Parker. The victory marked the program's first NJAC Tournament win in school history, sending the Hawks into the conference semifinals in their inaugural season as members of the NJAC.

The fifth-seeded Hawks (8-11) battled through relentless offensive pressure from the host Cougars, who held a 22-6 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Despite the pressure, SUNY New Paltz remained composed, capitalizing on its limited offensive opportunities to secure the historic postseason victory.

Ashley McGough and Parker provided the offense for the Hawks, while senior Maya O'Keefe assisted on both goals. Goalkeeper Grace Grant anchored the defensive effort, finishing with five saves across the full 60 minutes.

Kean wasted little time applying pressure, forcing Grant into action just 37 seconds into the contest on an attempt from Shannon Conroy. The Cougars continued to press forward, generating an early penalty corner and another opportunity from Conroy, but the Hawks' defense held firm.

SUNY New Paltz broke through on its first sustained attacking opportunity. McGough sent an attempt wide at the 7:56 mark before finding the back of the cage just 18 seconds later. O'Keefe provided the assist as McGough put the visitors ahead, 1-0, with 8:14 elapsed.

The Cougars responded by maintaining possession in the attacking end, earning consecutive penalty corners late in the opening quarter. However, the Hawks' defensive unit stood tall, blocking a late attempt from Conroy to preserve the one-goal advantage entering the second period.

Kean continued to dictate the offensive tempo in the second quarter, generating several opportunities inside the attacking circle. The Cougars fired three attempts in a span of 21 seconds early in the period, but the SUNY New Paltz defense turned away each opportunity.

McGough nearly doubled the Hawks' advantage at the 25:48 mark, forcing Kean goalkeeper Daniella Maresca into a save. Less than a minute later, the Cougars capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity. Conroy saw her initial attempt blocked before collecting the ensuing opportunity and finding the back of the cage at 26:35, leveling the contest at one apiece heading into halftime.

With the score deadlocked, both sides continued battling for control throughout the third quarter. Grant turned away an early attempt from Ali Stoner before McGough nearly restored the Hawks' lead at 34:56, only to have her shot denied by a defensive save from Kean's Lilly Fried.

The Cougars continued testing Grant, who came up with two additional stops against Stoner during the period. SUNY New Paltz earned a golden opportunity to regain the advantage at the 40:35 mark when Parker stepped up for a penalty stroke, but Maresca made the save to keep the contest even.

Neither side could break through before the end of the third, setting the stage for a decisive final 15 minutes.

Kean continued applying pressure early in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks remained disciplined defensively, limiting the Cougars' ability to capitalize on their attacking opportunities.

With under five minutes remaining in regulation, SUNY New Paltz generated its first penalty corners of the evening, earning consecutive opportunities at 55:47 and 56:02. The Hawks made the second chance count, as O'Keefe connected with Parker, who delivered the decisive strike at 56:09 to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage with just 3:51 remaining.

The Cougars mounted one final offensive surge, earning consecutive penalty corners less than a minute after falling behind. The Hawks' defense blocked back-to-back attempts from Conroy before Stoner rattled an attempt off the post at 57:35, narrowly missing the equalizer.

Kean continued searching for the tying goal, but Grant came up with another crucial save on Stoner with 46 seconds remaining. The Cougars earned one final penalty corner with 14 seconds left, but SUNY New Paltz held on to secure the 2-1 postseason victory.

McGough led the Hawks with four shots, including three on goal, while Parker registered two attempts, both on target. O'Keefe's two assists proved instrumental in the victory, contributing to both SUNY New Paltz goals.

Grant finished with five saves, including three in the third quarter and another in the closing minute, as the Hawks overcame a 22-6 shot differential to keep their inaugural NJAC postseason run alive.

SUNY New Paltz advances to the NJAC Tournament semifinals, where it will face top seeded Rowan University on Wednesday at 6PM.
