Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz suffered a 78-55 loss on the road to Oneonta Friday night.
The Hawks dropped to 11-12 overall and 9-7 in the SUNYAC, while the Red Dragons improved to 15-8 and 13-3, respectively.
SUNY New Paltz's offense was limited to its second lowest offensive out-put of the season, shooting about 37 percent on 22-for-59 from the field. The Hawks also struggled on the boards, totaling 28 rebounds to 48 for the Red Dragons who did a good job of ending possessions quickly with their work on the glass.
The game was tight to start with SUNY New Paltz holding a slight lead until a 3-pointer tied the game at 17 mid-way through the first half for Oneonta. The hosts then proceeded on a 7-0 run and they never trailed the rest of the way.
Justin Nielizaire scored two underneath following a steal by
Oumar Sy to trim the deficit to two with four minutes left, but the Hawks went cold from the floor with the Red Dragons ending the half on a 9-1 stretch to take a 10-point lead at the break at 39-29.
Oneonta built on the advantage in the second half, going up by as many as 26 and the Hawks never recovered as they continued struggling finding their shooting touch. They made just 9-for-31 from the floor in the second half, including 2-for-10 from 3-point range.
Thomas Keane led SUNY New Paltz with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting with three rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes.
Isaiah Rivera followed with 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting with three boards, three assists and two steals.
Mo Sylla followed with six points, nine rebounds, an assist and a block.
Despite the loss, the Hawks are still in good position to host a playoff game in the Hawk Center. However, they have a huge final regular season weekend ahead, as they go on the road to take on Plattsburgh and Potsdam with the former vying for a fourth seed alongside the Hawks. SUNY New Paltz is set to conclude the regular season against the Cardinals Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Potsdam the following afternoon at 4 p.m.
