SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Rolls to 3-0 Sweep of Baruch

Hawks make quick work of hosting Bearcats in three sets to improve to 5-3 overall

New York, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz traveled down to New York City to sweep hosting Baruch Tuesday night in three sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-17).

The Hawks improved their overall record to 5-3, while the Bearcats remained winless and dropped to 0-6 to start the year.

SUNY New Paltz was dominant throughout the match, holding the advantage in points (50-33), kills (36-23), aces (6-4), blocks (8-6), assists (34-23) and digs (20-13), while hitting a productive .483 on the night, while keeping Baruch at .087 in the match.

The first set went fast as the Hawks collectively hit at a .600 clip, led by Matt Teplansky who had seven kills in set one and even closed out the 25-16 victory with back-to-back aces. Daniel Shanley was the facilitator, as he posted 11 of his game-leading 30 assists in the first period.

SUNY New Paltz went up 16-7 in the second thanks to a 5-0 run served through by junior Matt Kudlinski who capped the stretch with an ace and forcing an attacking error on a block by Nikko Tenedorio and Artair Kayser. The Bearcats worked back to within five at 20-15, but the Hawks closed out as they held set point at 24-17 following a service error from the hosts with Kayser sealing the 2-0 lead for his side on a big solo block at set point.

Baruch opened the third set with a slight 2-1 advantage, but SUNY New Paltz started rolling as a serving error allowed the Hawks to side out and hand the ball to Shanley. Shanley then proceeded to serve the next seven points to push his team out in front and SUNY New Paltz never trailed from that point forward.

A service error lifted the Hawks to match point at 24-16 with the hosts helping in the sweep as they served long to end the set 25-17.

Kayser led the team with 9.5 points on five kills and a team leading five blocks with two digs. Teplansky finished with a game-high eight kills, hitting an efficient .417 with an assist, an ace and six digs. Kudlinski tallied a game-high three aces, while Shanley added a kill, an ace, two blocks and two digs.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action this weekend, going up to Albany, NY to face the hosting Sage Gators and Rivier Raiders Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
