SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Claims Four-Set Road Win Over Arcadia

Glenside, PA — The State University of New York New Paltz collected a four-set road victory over Arcadia Saturday, 24-26, 25-13, 25-18.

Despite outhitting the Knights, .333 to .097 in the first period, the hosts took the first set in extra points, 26-24. The hosts overcame a 10-point deficit with Hawks' Nikko Tenedorio solidifying the 10-point difference with a kill off a set by Matt Marusza to create a 19-9 score. SUNY New Paltz still managed set point at 24-22 following an Arcadia attacking error, but the Knights answered with four-straight points capped with an ace and a kill to claim a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks regrouped in the second and similarly to start got out to a comfortable double-digit advantage, as a Tenedorio registered another kill to push his team in front, 22-10. SUNY New Paltz made sure to close out the set, as Marusza went to Artair Kayser for a kill before dumping a kill over on the next point to tie the set at 1-1.

John Giotis gave the Hawks a 17-10 advantage in the third and the visitors sustained the comfortable margin with a block by Marusza and Peter Brutschin in the middle eventually getting SUNY New Paltz to set point at 24-18. Kayser sealed the 2-1 lead with a kill off a set by Marusza.
Michael Spiegel

The fourth stanza was tighter, but again the Hawks were in control. A6-1 run created a eight-point gap and SUNY New Paltz rolled from there. Following two straight points from the Knights, Tenedorio sided out for his side with a kill. Matt Kudlinksi subbed in and served the last two points. Michael Spiegel pushed his team to match point with a successful swing from the right side before a hitting error sealed the 3-1 win for the Hawks.

Spiegel led all hitters with 22.5 points on a career-high 21 kills to go along with three blocks and seven digs. Tenedorio followed with 10 kills, while adding an assist, an ace, four blocks and nine digs. Marusza facilitated the offense and totaled a career-high 52 assists, while adding a block, three kills and nine digs.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday hosting the No. 1 nationally ranked team in the country, in non-conference rival Springfield College. First serve is 6 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
