Annandale-on-Hudson, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz dropped its opening SUNYAC series doubleheader to Cortland Friday afternoon, 12-2 in seven innings and 6-3, respectively.
The Hawks (7-7 overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) hosted the Red Dragons (12-7-1, 5-0) at Honey Field on the campus of Bard College as Loren Campbell was drying from a torrential downpour Friday night.
Michael Weed earned the Game 1 start for SUNY New Paltz and the junior threw 5.1 innings and gave up 10 hits, eight earned runs and three walks with four strikeouts, as Cortland got up early in the matchup.
After scoring two in the first, the Red Dragons tallied a 5-0 lead in the third all from base hits. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the fifth, as
Joe Richetti broke up the shutout, scoring on a passed ball. SUNY New Paltz pushed another across on a walk with the bases loaded but couldn't pile onto the inning as the gap closed to 6-2.
However, Cortland answered in the following at-bat as it broke the game open with six runs in the sixth. The Hawks had no answer and following just one hit in the game they succumbed to the 12-2 loss after seven innings played.
Matt Sarni was the only player for SUNY New Paltz to register a hit in the game.
Kiran Paingankar started Game 2 for the Hawks and tossed five innings, giving up seven hits, four earned runs and four walks with three strikeouts.
Dylan Hayes and
Connor Catania pitched in relief with the former tossing three innings, yielding two hits and one earned run with the latter giving up one earned run and one walk in an inning pitched.
The Red Dragons led off with a three-run first inning with SUNY New Paltz answering in the bottom half with a run scored. Sarni started the frame with a hit-by-pitch and was later brought home on an RBI ground out from
Ryan Muskopf.
Joe Richetti helped his team out in the bottom second, ripping a two-out double and was later brought home on an RBI single from
Luca Sieger in the next at-bat, trimming the deficit to 3-2.
Each team scored a run in the fifth with Sarni hitting a sacrifice fly to right to score Richetti and get the Hawks within one once again at 4-3.
However, the offense stalled for SUNY New Paltz with Cortland adding insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to solidify the 6-3 outcome.
Richetti led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sarni and Seiger each added a hit and RBI with Sieger also tallying a walk.
The two teams conclude its three-game series Sunday at Loren Campbell Memorial Field at 12 p.m.
