Purchase, NY — After a near two-week hiatus, the State University of New York New Paltz returned to action Friday for a road doubleheader against SUNY Purchase and needed just 10 total innings to earn the two-game sweep.
The Hawks (7-5 overall) gave up just one total hit in the two games combined with senior pitcher
Alex Frenza highlighting the afternoon as she tossed just the third-ever perfect game in program history in Game 1, which SUNY New Paltz won, 10-0 before
Morgan Smith threw a one-hitter in an 8-0 victory. Both games only went five innings as the Hawks run-ruled the hosts.
SUNY New Paltz broke up the stalemate in the third inning of Game 1, started on a walk by
Kaitlyn Gordon who then stole second to put herself in scoring position.
Ava Thys batted Gordon in before
Kelsey O'Brien kept the rally going, as she struck an RBI double to plate Thys.
Ella Sharrock then cleared the bases as she rocked a two-run homer to tally her fourth home run of the year.
Jenna Carmody rounded out the scoring in the inning, as she lifted a ball out to center, scoring
Maddie Anderson on a sacrifice fly to bring the lead to 5-0.
After adding a run in the fourth, the Hawks put the game away in the fifth. Anderson led off with a base hit with Carmody following, hitting a double to left.
Lauren Serrao then scored both Anderson and Carmody on a knock up the middle. Gordon doubled to bring Serrao home with the latter scoring two batters later on a wild pitch, which pushed the advantage to 10-0. Frenza made quick work of the bottom half, needing just 10 pitches to get through three batters to hold onto the perfect performance.
Frenza threw all five innings, giving up no hits or walks with a season-high 10 strikeouts in only 65 pitches thrown to improve her record to 4-3. She joins former Hawks Lindsay Roman and
Sydney Waldon as the only two to notch a perfect game for the program.
Not to be out-done, Smith threw a one-hitter in Game 2 in a five-inning. 8-0 shutout. She needed just 50 pitches to get through the rout, giving up one hit and allowing six fly outs and six ground outs as she improved her record to 2-1 on the year.
Carmody went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI to sustain the offense. Anderson added three RBI, a double and a run scored.
Mallory Rohon tallied her first home run of the season, as she ended with two runs and two RBI in the game.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, going on the road to face Ramapo for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
