SUNY New Paltz Softball Falls to Ramapo in Road Doubleheader

Hawks lose doubleheader to hosting Roadrunners, 5-1 in eight innings and 5-3

Mahwah, NJ — The State University of New York New Paltz lost both games of its doubleheader to Ramapo College Wednesday afternoon, 5-1 in eight innings and 5-3, respectively.

Game 1 was knotted at 1-1 through seven innings played with the Hawks going up by a run in the second. Maddie Anderson aided in the lead, as she was brought home two batters later on an error at short on a grounder hit by Alex Frenza with two outs. A solo home run tied the game in the bottom the sixth, one of the few blemishes on the mound for Frenza.

SUNY New Paltz had the opportunity to take the lead in the top of the seventh, as Lauren Serrao led off with a four-pitch walk, but was thrown out trying to steal second. Frenza doubled two batters later to keep the rally alive, but a ground out kept the stalemate at ones.

The base running woes continued for the Hawks in the eighth, as Kaitlyn Gordon was picked off at second to start the inning before a line out and fly out ended the threat before it began. The Roadrunners rode the momentum into the bottom half, as a bunt to start placed two runners on. SUNY New Paltz intentionally loaded the bases with Frenza getting the first out on a strikeout, but Ramapo ended the game on one swing as a Paley Sullivan hit a walk off grand slam to clinch the 5-1 victory for her side.

The Hawks registered two hits in the game, which were by Anderson and Frenza. Frenza suffered the loss, despite only giving up four hits in 7.1 innings pitched, while also allowing four earned runs and four walks with eight strikeouts.

Walks plagued SUNY New Paltz early in Game 2, as the Roadrunners took a 4-0 lead after two innings. Morgan Smith walked in two runs in the bottom of the first and a lead-off walk in the second allowed another runner to come across on a two-run double two batters later.

SUNY New Paltz came back to life in the sixth, started on a Mallory Rohon one-out single. Anderson walked as she worked herself back into the count with the duo advancing on a passed ball. The extra bases weren't needed, however, as Brianna Hardwick cleared the way as she ripped her first home run of the season on a three-run shot over the left field wall to get the Hawks within one at 4-3. However, the threat ended as Ramapo earned two straight outs to keep the advantage at one.

The hosts added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and SUNY New Paltz had no answer in the final inning. Michaela Bridgwood opened with a leadoff single before getting into scoring position on a passed ball. Kelsey O'Brien earned a free base on a hit-by-pitch two batters later, but the threat ended with the Hawks stranding two runners on a foul out and pop up to solidify the 5-3 outcome.

Smith suffered the loss after throwing six innings and yielding six hits, five earned runs, nine walks with three strikeouts. Ella Sharrock, Rohon, Anderson and Hardwick each registered a hit with Rohon, Anderson and Hardwick all accounting for runs scored. Bridgwood went 2-for-3.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Friday and Saturday as it begins SUNYAC action in its home opener at Mary Gray Deane Field against Fredonia and Buffalo State, respectively.
