Galloway, NJ — The State University of New York New Paltz had a difficult task of taking on a hot Stockton team on the road Saturday.
The undefeated Osprey's came as advertised, hot off an upset win over nationally ranked Swarthmore. Their momentum continued into Saturday where they dominated in every statistical category and was too much for the Hawks as the hosts came away with a 27-5 victory.
SUNY New Paltz (0-3) fought valiantly with freshman goalie Jacob Kenney coming up with a career-high 18 saves in about 43 minutes of action, while sophomores
Eric Waldron and
Zach Novak finished the game with the latter adding four stops.
Stockton held the advantage on shots (75-20), shots on goal (49-11), ground balls (52-24) and face offs (21-14), while forcing a season-high 33 Hawks turnovers versus 14 for the hosts. SUNY New Paltz struggled in the midfield, going 16-for-27 on clears, while the Ospery's were successful on 20-of-21.
Senior long-stick midfielder
Sean Cassidy scored his first career goal on a good clear with less than a minute left in the first quarter to get SUNY New Paltz on the board and breakup a Stockton 6-0 run to start the game. Freshman attackman
Blake Hayden then tallied his first collegiate goal following a faceoff win for the Hawks to cut the score, 8-2 to begin the second quarter after the Osperys found the back of the net to open the period.
The hosts rattled off six straight and by halftime held a comfortable 14-2 lead.
Finn Smith and
Colin Cleary scored back-to-back unassisted goals in the latter part of the third quarter, but Stockton answered with another score to push the advantage to 19-4 entering the final 15 minutes.
Blake Lyons then capped the scoring for SUNY New Paltz, forcing a turnover in the middle of the field before getting rewarded on an assist from
Nick Darcangelo on the offensive set.
Lyons ended as the team's top point leader, tallying an assist and a goal on three shots, two on goal. He also added a ground ball and caused turnover.
Ryan O'Hara led the team with five ground balls and went 12-for-22 on faceoffs.
Yasin Tabatabaee led SUNY New Paltz defensively, recording two caused turnover and three ground balls. Cassidy followed as he produced a point, along with two ground balls and one caused turnover.
The Hawks are back in action Tuesday, hosting Western Connecticut State on North Turf Field at 4 p.m.
