Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New Paltz dominated through a series sweep on the road over Plattsburgh Friday, highlighted by some rare feats by ace
Alex Frenza and power hitter
Ella Sharrock.
Frenza notched her second no-hitter of the season to bring the Hawks a 6-0 win in Game 1, while Sharrock hit for the cycle in Game 2, to carry her team to a 7-2 victory in Game 2.
Frenza threw a full seven innings, giving up no hits or runs with only two walks and a career-high 14 strikeouts, as she registered her sixth complete game shutout on the year. Her feat was matched from a five-inning no-hitter thrown on April 10 against Morrisville, recording just the ninth no-hitter in program history to continue an illustrious individual season which also boasts just the third perfect game in program history that was thrown on March 27 against Purchase.
SUNY New Paltz gave Frenza run support in the fourth to break up the stalemate. It opened the top of the frame with three-straight base hits. Sharrock brought
Kelsey O'Brien home for what turned into the game-winning run on a single up the middle.
Mallory Rohon added on with an RBI single to right to plate Sharrock.
Rohon helped with an insurance run in the sixth, leading-off with a walk before being replaced by
Kate Hope. Hope used her speed to go first to home on a double to center by
Brianna Hardwick to create a 3-0 cushion. The team then piled on three more for good measure in the sixth to clinch a 6-0 win.
Morgan Smith pitched a gem of her own in Game 2, as the sophomore threw a complete game to grab a 7-2 win for her side, giving up just six hits and two earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz didn't waste time getting on the board in Game 2, thanks to Sharrock who belted her seventh home run of the season, tying the single season record and putting herself just two shy of breaking the program's all-time record.
She cleared the bases after
Maddie Anderson doubled to bring
Ava Thys home who led off the contest with a base hit. O'Brien followed with a single up the gut of the infield before Sharrock cleared the left field fence to quickly bring the Hawks' advantage to 4-0.
Sharrock doubled the next time up at bat and was brought home by Rohon to bring the lead to 5-0 after the third. Sharrock was the catalyst once again in the fourth, as the junior singled through the left side of the infield to plate Anderson who earned a base two batters prior on a fielder's choice.
Sharrock then concluded a dominant performance by ripping a triple to right to lead off the seventh to complete the cycle, recording the first in program history. She then registered her third run of the game, as Hardwick brought her home on an RBI bae hit two batters later to cap the offense for SUNY New Paltz and solidify the 7-2 outcome.
Sharrock's illustrious stat line finished at 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, a triple, a double, and a home run to finish the day going, 6-for-8 with five runs and four RBI. O'Brien followed offensively, as she hit 5-for-8 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Anderson finished 3-for-7 with two runs and an RBI, while Rohon went 3-for-3 in Game 1 and ended the afternoon with three RBI and two walks.
SUNY New Paltz improved to 20-8 overall and 9-1 in the SUNYAC, while extending its winning streak to five as it enters Saturday's doubleheader series on the road against Potsdam. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
