Potsdam, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz extended its winning streak to seven and improved its SUNYAC record to 11-1 after handling the hosting Potsdam Bears Saturday in a doubleheader sweep.
The Hawks (22-8, 11-1) needed just 10 innings to collect a pair of victories over the Bears, winning Game 1, 13-3 and Game 2, 9-0.
SUNY New Paltz took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Game 1 and opened up the contest with a huge 12-run second inning. The frame totaled six hits, four walks, a hit-by-pitch and two errors, which allowed the Hawks to ultimately seal the victory.
Kaityln Gordon swung for an RBI single, which plated
Brianna Hardwick to get the scoring started in the inning.
Ava Thys earned an RBI on a bases loaded walk before
Maddie Anderson swung for an RBI base hit to plate
Lauren Serrao.
Kelsey O'Brien registered an RBI walk as the bases remained loaded for the visitors.
Serrao and Gordon came back to bat again and both tallied RBI base hits to bring the score to 11-0. Anderson also double-dipped and recorded another RBI in the inning on base hit that brought Serrao around once again before O'Brien capped the inning on an RBI ground out, which returned Gordon home for the second time in the stanza.
Frenza improved to 11-5 after throwing a complete five-innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, three walks with eight strikeouts.
Leah Gunsett threw Game 2 for SUNY New Paltz and was dominant, as the sophomore allowed just one hit and three walks with 10 strikeouts to improve her record to 4-1 overall.
The Hawks capitalized early thanks to a lead-off triple by
Ava Thys to start the game in the top of the first and was plated off a sacrifice fly from Anderson.
Ella Sharrock kept the inning alive with a two-out single, which was followed by a walk from
Mallory Rohon. Hardwick then brought both across on a single through the right side.
SUNY New Paltz then consistently added two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to end the game early with a run-ruled 9-0 victory.
Six different Hawks recorded at least a hit in the game. Thys finished 2-for-2 with two triples, a stolen base, two runs, an RBI and two walks. Sharrock also had a triple, as she went 2-for-4 with two runs. Serrao finished 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a walk.
SUNYAC play continues at home next weekend with the team hosting Oswego April 24 and Canton April 25 for doubleheader matchups on Mary Gray Deane Field.
