New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz quickly earned a dominating doubleheader shutout over visiting Canton Thursday afternoon on Mary Gray Deane Field, collecting 18-0 and 10-0, five-inning victories.
The Hawks gave up just one hit total on the day with sophomore
Morgan Smith collecting her first career no-hitter in Game 2, as she was an out away from registering the fourth Perfect Game in program history.
After retiring 14-straight batters, Smith registered back-to-back strikeouts to open the fifth and got ahead in the count against the Roos' Emily Hobart. The next two pitches were close but called outside before Hobart tooked at her third-straight ball to earn the walk and put a blemish on Smith's perfect bid. Smith forced a fly-out though on two pitches on the next at-bat to close out the side and record the no-hitter.
Smith improved her record to 8-2 after going a full five innings, allowing just a walk with a career-high nine strikeouts.
Seven players for SUNY New Paltz had a hit in the game with
Lauren Serrao and
Kaitlyn Gordon going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI apiece, while combining for three stolen bases.

SUNY New Paltz gave Gunsett a 5-0 lead in the first and then broke the game open with nine runs scored in the third, which led to the run-ruled 18-0 five-inning victory.
The Hawks improved to 24-8 overall and 13-1 in the SUNYAC while extending their winning streak to nine as they continue conference play Friday, hosting Oswego on Mary Gray Deane Field for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
