New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz secured its grip even further on the top spot in the SUNAYC with a pair of wins over visiting Oswego Friday afternoon, 10-2 in five innings and 9-5, respectively.
The Hawks extended their winning streak to 11, boosting their overall record to 26-8 overall and 15-1 in the SUNYAC, while staying perfect at home to honor their four graduating seniors in
Alex Frenza,
Kelsey O'Brien,
Lauren Serrao and
Halle Sacharoff on Senior Day.
The afternoon, however, was highlighted by a Game 1, first inning bomb by
Ella Sharrock, which marked her eighth of the season to set a new single season program record as she also tied the most in program history with 13 career home runs.
Sharrock's three-run homer set the tone for the rest of the game, as
Brianna Hardwick also blasted a ball over the fence at Mary Gray Deane Field in the third, which brought SUNY New Paltz a 7-0 lead to help in the run-ruled, 10-2, five-inning victory.
Frenza earned the win to improve to 12-5 overall after tossing a complete five innings of work, allowing just five hits, one earned run with six strikeouts. Sharrock finished a productive game, going 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.
Jenna Carmody also went 3-for-3 adding two runs, while Serrao finished 2-for-3 with a triple, run and RBI.

The two teams played a tighter Game 2 as the score was tied at five heading into the fourth.
Morgan Smith replaced Gunsett in the third and closed out the side with a double play. She went back to work in the fourth and sat down the side, allowing the Hawks some life to regain control in the bottom half.
Ava Thys got the frame started with a one-out double. After
Maddie Anderson walked, Sharrock kept the rally going on a two-out two-RBI triple to right that pushed the go-ahead runs of Thys and Anderson across.
Mallory Rohon followed with an RBI double to center to bring Sharrock home. Hardwick then capped a prolific two-out rally, drilling a base hit to left field, which allowed
Michaela Bridgwood — running for Rohon — to score from second, allowing the Hawks a 9-5 cushion.
That was all the run support Smith needed, as the sophomore went back to work and held on the rest of the way, giving up just three hits the rest of the way, stranding two in scoring position as she closed out the game with another double play.
Smith tossed 4.2 innings, allowed four hits and had one strikeout as she earned the win. The offense went off with 12 hits with five different players having a multi-hit game. O'Brien went 3-for-4 with a double, run and an RBI. Sharrock went 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, sac fly and three RBI. Hardwick went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Anderson and Thys each went 2-for-3 with a double and combined for five runs scored and two walks.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Union starting at 3 p.m. before concluding its regular season schedule Friday against Oneonta for a doubleheader on Mary Gray Deane Field starting at 3 p.m.
