Box Score 2 New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz bested the visiting Union Garnet Chargers in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The Hawks earned a 5-0 shutout in the first game, while winning by the same margin in the second, 7-2.
SUNY New Paltz rises to a 28-8 record, while the Chargers fall to 14-20 overall. The doubleheader contest marked the Hawks' last nonconference matchup of the season as they close up the latter portion of their schedule.
Alex Frenza earned another no-hitter in the first game, making the senior the only Hawk in SUNY New Paltz softball history to pitch multiple no-hitter games. In seven innings pitched, the New Paltz, NY native collected 10 strikeouts with one batter walked.
SUNY New Paltz got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, with runs scored by juniors
Maddie Anderson and
Ava Thys thanks to a full team effort with seven at bats to earn the scores.
However, the Hawks would not score again until the sixth inning, but in another team effort the hosts put three runs on the board. Sophomore
Mallory Rohon started with a single and was moved to second by a walked
Brianna Hardwick.
Freshman
Jenna Carmody continued with a fly out to third for Rohon to advance to third. With runners on the corners, freshman
Kaitlyn Gordon singled to send Rohon home. Thys was walked, pushing Gordon and pinch runner
Lindsey Serrao to second and third, loading the bases.
On an error by Union, Anderson advanced to first next at bat with Serrao reaching home. O'Brien also reached first on a non-hitting play, being walked by the Garney Chargers which forced Gordon home. The sixth ended with the Hawks earning three runs, ending the inning and the game with SUNY New Paltz victorious 5-0.
In game two, a double by
Ella Sharrock started off SUNY New Paltz's scoring, as the junior captain sent home
Kelsey O'Brien and Thys with the RBI to start the first inning up 2-0.
Brianna Hardwick followed with a double of her own, and Sharrock rounded the bases to score the Hawks' third of the inning and closed the first 3-0.
O'Brien got the Hawks going in the third inning as the senior dinged a double, followed by Sharrock who sent O'Brien home with a double of her own. The third, however, was highlighted again by the duo of Sharrock and Hardwick, as the former touched home to extend the lead off a sacrifice fly from the latter. SUNY New Paltz held onto a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth.
The Hawks added one in the fourth and Union scored two in the fifth to cut the score to 6-2, but SUNY New Paltz had a then insurmountable advantage, and took home game two 7-2.
The Hawks are back at home Friday as they take on Oneonta in their final doubleheader of the season, with the contests being SUNY New Paltz's Green Out for Mental Health Awareness games. The first matchup is set for 3 p.m., with the second slotted for 5 p.m.
