SUNY New Paltz Baseball Takes Series Sweep of Canton with 10-5 Win

Hawks sweep series over hosting Roos with 10-5 victory Sunday at Lowville High School

Lowville, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz earned a series sweep over Canton after winning Game 3 of the series Sunday, 10-5.
 
The two teams returned to Lowville High School, as the Roos played host with their home field unplayable do to weather conditions.
 
Michael Weed earned the start and threw 4.1 innings before he was relieved by Johnny McHugh in the fifth. Connor Catania then pitched the last three innings and impressed, allowing just three hits, a walk with four strikeouts.
 
SUNY New Paltz gave early run support, scoring four in the first inning that was stemmed from a two-out rally after Sarni led off with a single. Christian Apicella laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Sarni over before Grathwohl brought the first run across on a double to left. After Joe Richetti flew out, Fabian Apicella ripped a base hit through the left side to place runners on the corners. Jo Scarabino then cleared the bases on a triple to right, scoring both Apciella and Grathwohl. The two-out run continued as Ryan Muskopf batted in Scarabino on a hit up the middle to bring the lead to 4-0.
 
After adding a run in the second, the Hawks piled on three more in the third to take a 8-0 lead. Again, SUNY New Paltz were spurred by a two-out rally, as Christian Apicella reached safely on a throwing error on a bunt, allowing Ryan Muskopf to cross home. Grathwohl took advantage on the extra out, ripping a single to left that scored Apicella.

Canton cut the deficit in half with a four-run fifth, forcing Weed out of the game. With the bases loaded, McHugh came in and let up a two RBI single to bring the score to 8-3. The Roos added another on an RBI base hit, but McHugh managed the damaged as he stranded the bases loaded after earning a line out and strikeout to close out the side with SUNY New Paltz holding an 8-4 advantage.
 
Each team brought a run across in the sixth before Richetti capped the offense for both teams in the seventh, as hit belted a triple to left center that scored Sarni who walked to lead off the frame.

Catania held on from there, seeing 13 batters on 53 pitches thrown in the last three innings to hold onto the 10-5 victory. Meanwhile, the Hawk offense produced 13 hits with five different hitters registering at least two hits in the game. Grathwohl went 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. Scarabino also finished 3-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI. Sarni accounted for three runs scored while adding a hit, stolen base and a walk. Fabian Apicella went 2-for-5 with two runs, a walk and a stolen base. Richetti added a double, a triple, two RBI and a walk.
 
SUNY New Paltz continues its SUNYAC season Tuesday, going on the road to complete its three-game series against Oneonta Tuesday with a single game Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Hawks won their doubleheader matchup against the Red Dragons earlier this month, 11-1 and 10-3, respectively.
