SUNY New Paltz Baseball Sweeps Oneonta Series Thanks to Zykoff No-Hitter

Xavier Zykoff threw a seven-inning no-hitter to lead Hawks to 13-1 win over Red Dragons to sweep three-game series

Box Score Oneonta, NY — In what may be his last ever start in his career, Xavier Zykoff made history.

The senior and former All-Region selection, went a full seven innings, faced 24 batters and on 92 pitches didn't let up a single hit, giving up just three walks with four strikeouts to not only earn the victory but cement himself in the program record books with the program's first no-hitter recorded in recent history.

The Hawks (19-12 overall, 9-6 SUNYAC) handled the Red Dragons in their doubleheader matchup back on April 8 and cemented the series sweep following an efficient outing on the hill by Zykoff. His only blemish came in the bottom half of the first, as a sacrifice fly recorded Oneonta's first and only run of the game, as Joseph Monserrat earned a base on a hit-by-pitch before advancing over on a steal and an error.

Zykoff was in command from that point forward, as he gave up just two walks that came in the second and third before sitting down nine straight entering the seventh where he faced four batters before holding onto 10-plus run lead, solidifying the game shortening, run-ruled victory.

The score was tied at ones for the majority after the Red Dragons answered in the bottom of the first until SUNY New Paltz broke the game open in the fourth. Johnny McHugh started the stanza with a lead-off base hit. He was eventually brought home on an RBI single from Joe Richetti before Ryan Muskopf platted another run on a sacrifice fly to right. Joe Scarabino brought Fabian Apicella across on an RBI base hit to right before Matt Sarni walked in a run with the bases loaded. McHugh then came back up to the plate to re-start the order and ripped a bases clearing double down the right field line that brought the lead to 8-1.

SUNY New Paltz essentially ended the game in the sixth as it piled on four more to create a double-digit cushion. Garrett Grathwohl got the job done, rifling a ball to left, which scored Sarni from third who led off the inning with a walk. Apicella laid down a sacrifice bunt and scored McHugh from third who reached on a hit-by-pitch earlier in the inning. An error on a hit by Muskopf allowed Grathwohl to score before Apicella capped the stanza on a double steal, sliding home safely to bring the Hawks advantage to 12-1.

Scarabino added one last run for SUNY New Paltz in the seventh as he led off with a double. Wallace Kirkpatrick brought him home four batters later on an RBI ground out to help round out the 13-1 outcome.

Everyone in the Hawks lineup either earned a hit, a run or RBI on the day. Sarni had three runs, an RBI and four walks. McHugh went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Apicella had a hit, two runs, RBI, walk and stolen base. Scarabino went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

The victory puts the Hawks in good positioning in the third seed behind Cortland (14-1) and Oswego (13-4) with Oneonta in fourth at 6-8 overall. SUNY New Paltz concludes SUNYAC play this weekend face SUNY Plattsburgh for a three-game series on Loren Campbell Field.
