SUNY New Paltz Baseball Beats Union College 13-2 in 8 Innings

Schenectady, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz headed north on Thursday afternoon to play Union College. The Hawks beat the Chargers 13-2 in 8 innings.
 
Michael Weed started the game on the mound for the Hawks pitching 3.0 innings, striking out four batters, allowing no hits, no walks and no runs. 
 
SUNY New Paltz got the ball rolling in the third inning scoring six runs. Wallace Kirkpatrick reached first base on a dropped sacrifice fly, batting in both Robert Gregory (earned) and Matt Sarni (unearned). Joe Richetti singled and Kirkpatrick scored (unearned). Richetti then advanced to second on a balk and Garrett Grathwohl scored (unearned). Gregory was walked and Johnny McHugh scored the fifth run (unearned.) Sarni singled batting in Richetti (unearned) for the sixth and final run of the inning.
 
In the top of the fifth Sarni singled to left field batting in Tommy Benfer. Grathwohl reached first on a fielding error and Tommy Poggi scored (unearned) the Hawks eighth, unanswered run.
 
Connor Catania stepped onto the mound in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catania pitched 2.0 innings, let up two hits, two runs and one walk. 
 
Union scored their lone two runs in the bottom of the fifth. 
 
Benfer doubled to right center in the top of the sixth, batting in Fabian Apicella.
 
Ryan Knieriemen pitched in the bottom of the sixth, letting up two walks before Dylan Hayes came to the mount to relive him. Hayes pitched 3.0 innings, striking out one batter and letting up one hit. 
 
In the top of the eighth Poggi doubled to right center, Sarni advanced to third and both Benfer and Gregory scored. With the Hawks up 11-2, Sarni scored on a wild pitch and Poggi advanced to third. Grathwohl flied out to left field, ending the game for the Hawks with a sacrifice fly that brought Poggi home for the 13th and final run of the game. 
 
The Hawks head to Purchase New York on Friday for a double header against Manhattanville University.
