SUNY New Paltz Baseball Earns 4-1 Win Over Mount Saint Mary College

Hawks play six innings of baseball before rain cements 4-1 win over hosting Knights

Newburgh, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz played six innings of baseball Wednesday afternoon to solidify a 4-1 win over hosting Mount Saint Mary College.

The game was cut short due to rain in a low scoring affair that helped the Hawks get back to .500 at 8-8 overall with the Knights dropping to 7-14.

Linus Oudom earned the start and threw five innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout to improve his record to 2-0 on the year. Robert Gregory came in to pitch the sixth and held onto the three-run lead to earn his first save of the season.

SUNY New Paltz was the first team on the board to start the second inning. Fabian Apicella got the frame started on a full count walk before advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch. Tommy Benfer helped a Apicella across as his grounder to third was muffed allowing Apicella, with two outs, to round the bases and get home on the error.

MSMC earned its only run of the game in the bottom of the third, which tied the score at 1-1. Alex Martinez rallied the Knights with a two-out base hit before getting over to second on an error. Noah Anderson then brought him home on an RBI single to center but Oudom settled in and forced a pop out to close out the side.

SUNY New Paltz gave its freshman arm some breathing room with three runs in the fifth. Matt Sarni aided in the cause with a one-out double down the left field line and was later brought home on a balk after he stole third. Wallace Kirkpatrick eventually scored on a balk as well, getting on initially on a hit-by-pitch before advancing on a wild pitch on the next at-bat. Joe Richetti rounded out the scoring, as he touched home thanks to a passed ball after getting on base with a two-out single.

Tommy Poggi also helped the offense, going 2-for-3 to register two of the team's four hits in the game. Sarni finished with a double, a run and a stolen base.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Thursday, going on the road to face Union College at 4 p.m.
