Oswego, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz narrowly came away with a win on the road over Oswego Wednesday afternoon, tying the contest in the final seconds of the third quarter, but the Hawks couldn't limit the Lakers offense down the stretch and fell, 15-10.
SUNY New Paltz kept a tight game, working back to tie the score at 5-5 by halftime thanks to a goal by
Finn Smith in the final seconds of the period after a Hawks timeout.
After Oswego re-took a two-goal advantage to start the third, Brandon Oritz forced a turnover on the defensive end, which led to a
Jack McLaughlin goal off a feed from
Nick Darcangelo.
Luke Walters narrowly tied the game at sevens following a faceoff win from Brandon Lloyd, but his attempt was stopped on the semi-break by Lakers goalie Seamus Hand. Hand quickly got the ball up the field the other way and Oswego capitalized, re-upping the two-goal advantage with three minutes to go.
SUNY New Paltz kept chipping away though, as
Colin Cleary ripped a shot off a feed from McLaughlin to get his team back within one with less than a minute left. McLaughlin then knotted the score at 8-all. Taking a huge hit from a defenseman, McLaughlin bounced off the contact, re-gathered and ripped a bouncer that found its way past Hand for the highlight goal with six seconds left in the quarter.
However, the elation lasted for only a brief moment, as Oswego immediately answered off the faceoff. Austin Sroda won the ensuing draw, ran downfield, faked a shot to draw the Hawks defenders before dumping off a pass to Doryn Leclair for the goal in front of net as the horn sounded to give the hosts a 9-8 lead entering the fourth.
Darcangelo got his team back within one with nine minutes left in the game, dodging over a defender to his left before lasering a shot far pipe for his second of the day to cut the score, 10-9. However, once again, Oswego immediately responded off the faceoff with a win straight to goal to deflate the Hawks momentum, but Darcangelo scored his last of the day to cut the difference to one, one last time at 11-10 with five minutes to play.
The Lakers answered by rattling off three-straight, all stemmed off faceoff wins with SUNY New Paltz defense having no answers as the hosts quickly built a four-goal cushion within a minute. Oswego added one more for good measure with two minutes to go and SUNY New Paltz's comeback efforts stalled there.
The Hawks' offense was balanced as Cleary, McLaughlin and Darcangelo were the catalysts with four points apiece. Smith had a team-leading five ground balls, while Ortiz led the way defensively with a team-leading two caused turnovers to go along with three ground balls.
Jacob Kenny played the full 60 minutes in net for SUNY New Paltz and registered nine stops, while Hand finished with 13 saves for the Lakers.
The Hawks (3-11 overall, 1-5 SUNYAC) conclude their 2026 campaign at home Saturday, hosting SUNY Morrisville on North Turf Field at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
