New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz earned a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Sage Gators Wednesday afternoon on Mary Gray Deane Field, 4-1 and 8-0 in seven innings, respectively.
The first win of the day also pushed first-year Hawks head coach
Joe DiPietro to career win 700, which spans throughout his 20-plus year coaching career through Division I, II and III.
Alex Frenza earned the start and clinched the win on the mound to improve to 7-4 on the year. She tossed all seven innings and allowed just five hits, four walks and one earned run with nine strikeouts.
Sage led through two-plus inning until SUNY New Paltz gained the lead in the bottom of the third.
Maddie Anderson started the inning with a base hit and was brought home four batters later by
Mallory Rohon who snuck a grounder underneath the glove of the Gators' third baseman.
Brianna Hardwick kept the rally alive on an RBI double in the gap in right center with
Jenna Carmody finding the same spot in the following at-bat, which scored Meredith Garafolo who pinch ran for Hardwick and upping the score 3-1.
Carmody capped the scoring for both teams, as she scored Rohon in the fifth to finalize the 4-1 score. The Hawks out-hit Sage, 13-5 in the game. Rohon led the team, going 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. SUNY New Paltz was locked in for Game 2, needing only five innings to take care of the Gators.
Kelsey O'Brien and Sharrock were the catalysts in the first inning. O'Brien brought the go-ahead run across on a triple deep to center field, which scored
Ava Thys. Sharrock then cleared the bases with her team-leading fifth home run of the season on a two-run bomb, which already matches a career-most for the junior.
O'Brien hustled out a triple again in the second inning, which scored Anderson for another run in the second. In the third, Anderson brought home
Lauren Serrao with a sacrifice fly before a two-RBI double by
Kaitlyn Gordon that plated Carmody and Hardwick. Carmody then helped cap the scoring in the fourth, hitting a sacrifice fly to left to score a speedy
Kate Hope who pinch ran for Rohon to start the inning.
Morgan Smith earned the win after tossing four innings, giving up just four hits and no walks with four strikeouts in the shutout.
Leah Gunsett came in to pitch the fifth and allowed one hit and one walk.
The Hawks totaled 15 hits from nine different players. O'Brien was the catalyst, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Carmody went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while
