Morrisville, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz earned a doubleheader sweep of Morrisville Friday, winning 9-0 and 10-0 both in five innings, respectively.
Alex Frenza was near perfect as she threw a no-hitter in the complete game shutout, only giving up a single walk with nine strikeouts. Frenza becomes the ninth Hawk to register a no-hitter and first since
Leah Gunsett and
Sydney Waldon did so last year.
Kelsey O'Brien picked up where she left off Wednesday, leading the top of the order, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Brianna Hardwick also had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
Mallory Rohon, meanwhile, went 2-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and two walks.
The Hawks generated 11 hits in the game, scoring two in the second, four in the third and three more in the fourth to capture the 9-0 victory.
Leah Gunsett returned for her first start after missing the last month or so with an injury and the reigning All-SUNYAC pick delivered with five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits but walked seven with six strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz gave Gunsett run support early as
Ava Thys led off with a solo home run, registering her first of her career with the Hawks. Rohon helped score O'Brien four batters later on a sacrifice fly with
Ella Sharrock then creating a 3-0 lead after stealing home to register a run scored.
The team added a run in the second and two more in the third before blowing the game open with four runs in the fourth to aid in the run-ruled victory. O'Brien, Sharrock, Rohon and Hardwick began the inning with consecutive base-hits with Rohon and Hardwick delivering an RBI apiece during their respective at-bats.
Jenna Carmody scored Rohon on a sacrifice fly.
Michaela Bridgwood then rounded out the offensive afternoon for SUNY New Paltz, knocking an RBI single to left to plate Gordon to create a 10-0 cushion.
Eight batters contributed in a 12-hit outing for the Hawks. Sharrock went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI with a stolen base and triple. O'Brien went 2-for-2 with three runs and a walk, while Thys finished 2-for-3 with one run, two RBI and a walk.
SUNY New Paltz improved to 15-7 overall and 6-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Mustangs dropped to 2-15 and 1-5, respectively.
The Hawks are back in action Saturday, staying on the road to face Cortland for a doubleheader starting at noon.
