Cortland, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz split its doubleheader Saturday against SUNY Cortland, coming back from a six-inning 9-1 loss before winning Game 2, 3-1 in extra innings.
The Hawks moved its record to 16-8 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland sits at 15-8 and 6-2, respectively.
The Red Dragons pounced on ace
Alex Frenza to begin the afternoon with the two teams delayed to a 2:30 start due to inclement weather.
Cortland tallied 15 hits in the game and after taking a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth opened the game up in the next three innings, scoring three in the fifth, and four more in the sixth resulting in the run-ruled win.
Frenza threw 5.2 innings, and allowed a season-most 14 hits and nine earned runs with four walks and four strikeouts.
Meanwhile, the Hawks offense couldn't keep up as they registered just five hits in Game 1.
Maddie Anderson led the teamm going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.
Kelsey O'Brien batted Anderson in for the team's only RBI.
SUNY New Paltz bounced back in Game 2, however, and received a solid outing by
Morgan Smith on the mound. The sophomore had her best outing of the season, as she pitched a full eight innings, giving up just seven hits, one earned run and one walk with two strikeouts to improve her record to 6-2.
The Red Dragons' lone run came in the second to take the initial lead, but the Hawks answered in the third, thanks to an RBI base hit by Anderson, which scored
Lauren Serrao to knot the game at ones.
Neither team crossed home plate in the next four innings resulting in an extra eighth.
Ava Thys knocked a one-out single down the left field line before moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anderson. O'Brien then came up clutch with the senior captain rifling an RBI single to center, scoring a speedy Thys from second for the go-ahead run. SUNY New Paltz added one more insurance run, helped by a muffed throw at first on a grounder from
Mallory Rohon, allowing O'Brien to reach home safely.
Smith then shut down the side in the bottom half. She forced a foul out, then a pop up and a fly out to sit down the hosts in order on eight pitches to solidify the 3-1 victory.
Thys finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk in the lead-off spot. O'Brien went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Jenna Carmody also had a two-hit game, while Serrao finished 1-for-2 with a run.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, hosting John Jay for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Mary Gray Deane Field.
