New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz collected a doubleheader sweep of visiting John Jay Wednesday on Mary Gray Deane Field with the Hawks winning Game 1, 12-0 in a run-ruled five-innings played, while fought to earn a 1-0 victory in Game 2.
Alex Frenza earned the Game 1 complete game shutout, tossing all five innings and allowing just two hits, no runs with one walk and six strikeouts.
She was given a two-run lead at the bottom of the first, but the Hawks opened the game up with a 10-run third.
Maddie Anderson got the offense started with a lead-off double before getting brought home on an RBI single from
Kelsey O'Brien.
Mallory Rohon plated O'Brien two batters later before Frenza helped her own cause with a bases clearing double that invited three runs across, bringing SUNY New Paltz's lead to 7-0.
After a pitching change, the Hawks loaded the bases and
Michaela Bridgwood stole home before
Ella Sharrock put the exclamation mark on a prolific inning, belting a three-run home run to push the lead to 12-0. The homer notched Sharrock's sixth of the season, just one shy of tying the single-seaon program record set by Fallon Spriggs in 2015.
Anderson led the way going 2-for-2 with two doubles, three runs, a walk and an RBI.
Ava Thys also added two doubles, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs. O'Brien went 2-for-3 with a run, two stolen bases and an RBI.
Game 2 was a tighter affair with the two teams combining for 15 hits, nine for the Hawks. The score was at zeros until the sixth.
Brianna Hardwick led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and was replaced on the basepaths by
Kaitlyn Gordon.
Jenna Carmody earned a free base two batters later with
Lauren Serrao layering a hit to shallow left center. Gordon raced from second, rounding third and was waved home but was met at the plate on the throw and was tagged out to keep the stalemate at 0-0.
With an out to spare, Thys did enough to put the ball in play. Keen baserunning by Serrao, stalling John Jay on the throw and getting caught long enough in a pickle between second and third, allowed Carmody enough time to score before Serrao was tagged out to end the side, but not before SUNY New Paltz took a 1-0 lead into the seventh.
Leah Gunsett, who earned the start, held onto the shutout, as she closed out the side in four batters faced to improve her record to 3-1. She pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz improved to 18-8 and a perfect, 8-0 on Mary Gray Deanne Field, while winning its third straight.
The Hawks are back in action this weekend, going on the road to face Plattsburgh and Potsdam Friday and Saturday, respectively, in a doubleheader series.
