New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz dropped a 24-4 game to visiting Oneonta Wednesday afternoon on North Turf Field.
The Red Dragons dominated in every statistical category, totaling more shots (60-26), shots on goal (36-13), ground balls (37-15) and faceoffs (27-4).
Oneonta took no time in creating a comfortable cushion, scoring its first goal off the opening faceoff, which led to a 5-0 run before
Blake Lyons broke up the spurt with the hosts first score with about six minutes left in the period. The Red Dragons answered with five straight goals to end the quarter as they took a 10-1 advantage into the second.
Jack McLaughlin scored the team's second of the day early in the second period, finishing on a feed from
Finn Smith to cut the difference to 11-2. Oneonta went on a 5-0 run before
Blake Hayden broke up the stretch with a goal off an assist from Smith with two minutes left in the half.
Luke Walters scored for the fifth time this year, as the defensive midfielder capitalized off a find from Lyons to cut the score to 16-4 at the break.
The offense was capped there for SUNY New Paltz, however, and Oneonta rolled to the convincing 20-goal win. Lyons and Finn each had two points to pace the Hawks offense with Lyons also adding a ground ball. Sophomore defenseman
Drew Hulede led the defense with three caused turnovers, while adding a ground ball. He was followed by freshman
Sam Wilbert who added two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
