WEST HARTFORD, CT – The State University of New York New Paltz women's volleyball team returned to action Tuesday night, hitting the road for a midweek non-conference matchup against the University of Hartford. The Hawks battled the hosts through three sets but ultimately fell, 25-19, 25-12 and 25-17.
SUNY New Paltz entered the contest fresh off hosting the Hawk Invitational, where they competed against Vassar College, Colby-Sawyer College and Springfield College over the weekend before making the quick turnaround against host Hartford.
The Hawks went point-for-point with the hosts to begin the opening set, keeping the frame tight through the early stages. Hartford eventually found its rhythm and created separation midway through the set, but SUNY New Paltz continued to push before the hosts closed out a 25-19 win.
Hartford carried that momentum into the second, using an early run to establish control. The hosts maintained their advantage throughout the frame to take a 25-12 victory and move within a set of closing out the match.
SUNY New Paltz responded with its strongest defensive effort of the night in the third. The Hawks challenged Hartford at the net and held the hosts to a .114 hitting percentage, remaining within striking distance as they attempted to force a fourth set. Hartford, however, held off the comeback effort and finished the match with a 25-17 win.
Genevieve Carson led the SUNY New Paltz attack with six kills while hitting .235, with Genevieve Boyle adding four kills and eight digs. Christine Balbona made an impact across the floor with two service aces and a match-high three blocks, while Jordyn Lewis anchored the back row with a match-best 13 digs.
The Hawks totaled five blocks on the night, matching Hartford's output at the net.
