SUNY New Paltz held a grand opening ceremony Tuesday, March 28, 2006 to officially open the College's new 57,000-square-foot Athletic & Wellness Center. The Athletic & Wellness Center is connected to Elting Gymnasium. Activity spaces within the Athletic & Wellness Center include two cardiovascular and weight training fitness centers at the west and east ends. The 3,300-square-foot East Fitness Curve contains four Power Lift Combo Racks, a complete Cybex Eagle Circuit, a functional training station and array of cardiovascular machines. The East Curve includes 15 cardiovascular machines, Precor treadmills, elliptical trainers, exercise cycles, Cybex Arc Trainers and a SCIFIT upper body ergometer machine.
The 3,500-square-foot West Fitness Curve contains 21 cardio machines for a total of 36, including Precor and Cybex models. It also contains a free weight area and three Cybex modular stations. It also includes a stretching area, medicine balls, core training machines and other free weight stations. There are 10 40-inch LCD TV screens surrounding this state-of-the art equipment. The center also contains a new varsity gymnasium (the
Hawk Center) used for team practice and competition for volleyball and basketball.
These two areas are connected with an elevated and window-lined 1/9th-mile walking/jogging track that encircles the Hawk Center.
