Wellness & Recreation Job Positions

Jobs in this area include AWC Monitor (Front Desk, Fitness Monitor/Curves), Group Exercise Professional, Lifeguard or Personal Trainer. All interested applicants must be CPR/AED and First-Aid certified or willing to be certified before starting.


Hiring Process For AWC Monitors 
  1. Due to increased interest in these positions, a waitlist has been created to track applicants based on our staff availability each semester. From the list - applicants will be asked to fill out an official application and provide a resume. The number of students that are taken from the waitlist will depend on how many students are needed to hire for the upcoming school semester. Please reach out to cains1@newpaltz.edu to be placed on the waitlist. 
  2. Once candidates off of the waitlist submit the required forms, Interviews will be offered to the students with the strongest answers, experience and availability followed by a brief training session. 
  3. Please Note: All student workers at the AWC are required to be certified in CPR/AED and First Aid

How to become an AWC Supervisor:
AWC Building Supervisors (Typically Seniors/Graduate Students) are the highest rank of student employment in the Athletics, Wellness and Recreation department. These students are promoted from within the department and must meet the following requirements before applying. 
  1. We require the student to have worked at least one full year in any of the following positions:
  • Desk Monitor
  • Intramural Official
  • Lifeguard
  • Group Exercise Instructor
2. The student worker must show responsibility and reliability in their role as well as a good understanding of all Policies and Procedures at the AWC/Elting Gym + Pool. The student must also have little to no disposition forms in their positions before applying.

3. The student will formally apply at the end of a semester by submitting an Application, Resume and at least one Letter of Recommendation. 


AWC Monitor

Front Desk Monitor 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to answering telephones, managing the operation of the front service desk, answering questions, taking Group exercise reservations, enforcing facility access policies, conducting face checks, and distributing information and directions. Must have availability to work on either opening shifts, closing shifts and/or weekend shifts!

Curve Monitor
Responsibilities include supervising curve area, assisting individuals in using the equipment in the curve, cleaning machines and weights and conducting facility checks.

Elting Gym Monitor
Responsibilities include supervising gym, checking in patrons as they arrive, checking out basketballs, and cleaning the area when needed.


Group Exercise Professional
Responsibilities include, but not limited to development and implementation of safe, appropriate and fun wellness classes. Certification preferred. Candidates will receive group fitness training if necessary on safe and effective teaching. If interested in becoming a Group Exercise Professional, please contact kenneyk@newpaltz.edu


Lifeguard
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to accident prevention through the enforcement of policies, rules, regulation and conduct of persons using the pool. Responsible for opening and closing the pool, testing the pool water for the PH and chlorine levels along with the normal lifeguard duties. Applicants must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard and First Aid, CPR and AED certifications. Must have availability to work on either opening shifts, closing shifts and/or weekend shifts! If interested in becoming a Lifeguard, please contact graziann1@newpaltz.edu or cains1@newpaltz.edu

Intramural official/Scorekeeper
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to setting up, running and breaking down intramural league games, Winning Wednesday events and Late-Night Activities. Applicants must have or be willing to obtain a current First Aid, CPR and AED certification. Must be willing to work Sundays and/or Monday - Thursday afternoons/nights! Having a background in officiating or playing sports is preferred but not required. If interested in becoming an Intramural Official/Scorekeeper, please contact cains1@newpaltz.edu


Personal Trainer 
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to basic daily upkeep of the equipment and assisting users with the equipment. Past or present experience working in a fitness center, health club, or gym setting is helpful. Individuals with customer service experience a plus. Basic knowledge of exercise fitness principles and guidelines desired. Experience in working with various forms of exercise equipment including treadmills, elliptical, weight resistance machines and free weights desired. Previous experience in exercise instruction, demonstration, design, and prescription as well as certification as personal trainer will be given a high level of consideration.
