Field Hockey (early years prior to 2000)
Disclaimer: Information contained in this history has been compiled from a variety of available public sources and is as accurate as reported by those sources. Any errors or omissions should be forwarded by email to the Office of Athletic Communication.
Field hockey was first offered at SUNY New Paltz from at least 1967 through at least the 1971 season and played a schedule that included both four-year and two-year colleges as was the norm for most women’s intercollegiate athletic teams of that era. Information on those years is extremely limited, limited to a few lines in the Oneonta Daily Star. It is believed that Ms. Margaret Lutze was the coach of the field hockey team at New Paltz during that period.
Field hockey was reintroduced to SUNY New Paltz in 1999, with a start date for fall 2000. Athletic Director Jim Zalacca and Vice President for Enrollment L. David Eaton endorsed field hockey based on campus interest and on the growth of the sport at the high school level in the Mid-Hudson Valley and beyond.Â
