HOBOKEN, N.J. – After dropping a 3-0 decision (29-25, 25-19, 25-18) to the host Stevens Institute of Technology, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (18-5, 4-0 SUNYAC) rebounded with a sound 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-19) victory over NYU-Polytechnic in Ducks Invitational action Saturday morning.
Stevens' victory over New Paltz snapped the Hawks' 12-match win streak.
After a tough loss in the first set against the Ducks, the Hawks could not recover, falling by scores of 25-19 and 25-18 in the second and third games, respectively. Junior outside hitter
Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y.) paced the New Paltz attack with six kills, while freshman setter
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y.) handed out a team-high 10 assists. Freshman libero
Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) bolstered the defense with 15 digs, while sophomore middle hitter
Dana Vosilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) had two block assists.
The blue and orange had little trouble dispatching NYU-Polytechnic, handing the Blue Jays in straight sets. DiGiovanna once again accounted for much of the offense, notching 10 kills on 24 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage. In addition, DiGiovanna landed three service aces. King boasted 13 assists on the match, while Hack compiled a team-leading nine digs.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 6, when they travel to Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
