POTSDAM, N.Y. – After dropping both of its matches Friday evening, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (22-10, 6-2 SUNYAC) rebounded on Saturday, winning both of its matches on day two of the second round of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division Pool play at SUNY Potsdam.
The Hawks downed SUNY Plattsburgh, 3-0 (30-28, 25-11, 25-20), before besting Potsdam, 3-0 (25-20, 25-5, 25-21).
With pool play complete, New Paltz has secured the East Division's No. 2 seed for the SUNYAC Championship Tournament. SUNY Cortland locked up the No. 1 seed, while SUNY Oneonta will enter as the No. 3 seed. This marks the seventh straight year that the Hawks have qualified for the SUNYAC Tournament.
SUNY Fredonia went 8-0 in SUNYAC West matches this season and will host the SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed from the West Division. The event runs from Nov. 4-6.
The Hawks will face Buffalo State (the No. 3 seed in the west) in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m.
Against the Cardinals, junior outside hitter
Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y.) led the Hawks with a double-double, landing 10 kills and adding 16 digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Kelly Lavender (Apalachin, N.Y.) had nine kills, while freshman setter
Brigid Moore (Victor, N.Y.) handed out 18 assists. Sophomore right side
Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) boasted a team-high 18 digs.
In the match against Potsdam, sophomore right side
Eleanor Skovgaard (Pittsford, N.Y.) hit .750, registering six kills on eight total attempts with no attack errors. DiGiovanna hit .318 (7-0-22), while junior setter
Kelsey Garmendia (Pine Bush, N.Y.) kept the offense moving with 13 assists. Senior middle hitter
Dana Kindelmann (Nesconset, N.Y.) had an outstanding match blocking, registering six total in addition to her five kills.
New Paltz will tune up for the SUNYAC Championship Tournament from Friday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Skidmore Invitational. On Friday, the Hawks take on Union (N.Y.) College at 4 p.m. before squaring off with Ithaca College at 6 p.m.
