Box Score Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – While the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (1-1) hung tough with Mount Saint Mary College (1-0) during the first half of Wednesday evening's non-conference clash between the two programs, turnovers ultimately doomed the Hawks, as they fell by a 72-45 final in the Hawk Center.

The Hawks' downfall came with ball control. New Paltz committed 28 turnovers, which was twice as many as Mount Saint Mary's total. The Knights made the most of those chances, generating 33 points off turnovers.

Mount Saint Mary took 47 trips to the free-throw line and connected on 34 attempts, while the Hawks gained just 18 free-throw opportunities and drained nine. In addition, New Paltz dominated the rebound margin, outrebounding the Knights by a 53-35 edge.

Amanda Horvers led the Knights with a game-high 16 points and seven boards, while Jess Tice also enjoyed a solid outing, boasting 15 points, two assists, a block and five steals in 32 minutes of action.

Sophomore guard Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon, N.Y.) posted her second double-double in as many games, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 caroms. While it was not an extremely efficient shooting night for sophomore forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y.), she showed persistence in a 13-point effort. Junior forward Shanay Bradley (Bronx, N.Y.) pulled down 12 rebounds coming off the bench.

New Paltz led just once the entire game. The Hawks were up, 8-7, with 13:39 left to play in the first half, but the Knights took away the advantage with a three-pointer in the ensuing possession. Mount Saint Mary brought a 32-23 lead into the break and extended the cushion as the second half progressed.

The Hawks travel to Amherst, Mass., this weekend for the Amherst Tip-Off Invitational, which is hosted by Amherst College. New Paltz challenges No. 23 Colby College on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m. and takes on No. 1 Amherst on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 4 p.m.
