Women’s Basketball Drops Potsdam, 45-27, to Complete North Country Sweep

Box Score Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (3-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) dominated in nearly every facet of Saturday afternoon's State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) showdown against SUNY Potsdam (1-6, 0-2 SUNYAC) at Welsh Gymnasium, winning by a final score of 45-27.

Potsdam's cold shooting allowed New Paltz to walk away with the win. The Bears shot just 20.5 percent (9-of-44) from the field on the game, and while the Hawks did not have a stellar outing themselves offensively (27.7 percent off 18-of-65 from the floor), they did enough to come away with the North Country sweep. New Paltz defeated Plattsburgh, 67-55, last night in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Sophomore guard Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon, N.Y.) paced the Hawks on offense, scoring 12 points off 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 shooting from the charity stripe. Sophomore forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y.) chipped in eight, while junior guard Zoe Cohen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior guard/forward Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) each contributed six. Junior forward Shanay Bradley (Bronx, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 12 boards and also collected two blocks.

For the Bears, Aimee Kellicutt had nine points, while Katy Briedis pitched in six to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Sophie Parks helped Briedis out on the glass, grabbing seven boards.

For the opening moments of the game, the Bears kept up with the Hawks, as Potsdam countered New Paltz's 6-0 start with five unanswered points to pull the game within one. Both squads traded blows for a few minutes, and Briedis sank a three-pointer to put the Bears up 12-9 with 12:18 left to play in the first half. McCullough and DelGaudio each scored to give the Hawks the lead back, and Potsdam would gain the upper hand on the scoreboard for the final time in the contest at 7:57 when Kellicutt drained a layup.

The Hawks went on a 14-2 run to end the half, as junior guard Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made the score 27-15 in favor of New Paltz with two made free throws with eight ticks left on the clock. That score would serve as the halftime tally.

It was all Hawks from there on out, as the Bears were unable to get any closer than 12 points of the blue and orange in the second half.

New Paltz returns to the friendly confines of the Hawk Center on Wednesday, Dec. 8, when it takes on No. 15 William Paterson University of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) at 7 p.m.
