NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite gaining major contributions on the boards by junior forward
Shanay Bradley (Bronx, N.Y.), the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (3-4) was unable to stop No. 14 William Paterson University (7-0), as the visiting Pioneers prevailed, 71-59, in a non-conference game on Wednesday evening in the Hawk Center.
Bradley grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds, nine of which were off the offensive glass, and added 10 points to notch a double-double. New Paltz had 17 second-chance points on the evening thanks in part to her efforts, and the Hawks ended up winning the rebounding battle, 50-48. Sophomore forward
Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y.) poured in a team-high 18 points, which included a 6-of-8 performance at the line, and helped out defensively with a game-high five blocks.
William Paterson was led by the one-two punch of BriAnna Lucas and April Smith. Both contributed matching totals of 21 points, while Lucas posted the game-high in assists with seven and Smith reeled in a team-high 11 rebounds. Lucas was unflappable from the charity stripe, going 11-of-15. On the night, the Pioneers shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from long range.
After leading 12-10 with 13:44 remaining in the first half, the Hawks fell behind, allowing William Paterson to go on an 8-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer by Lindsey Callander. Junior point guard
Kaitlin Clifford (Staten Island, N.Y.) nailed a jumper to cut the Pioneer advantage to four at 20-16 with 7:44 left in the first period, but William Paterson would end the half on a 15-9 tear.
William Paterson led 35-25 at the break and prevented New Paltz from getting much closer for the first six minutes of the new stanza. The Hawks, however, would get within three at 12:43, as Bradley netted four points off two layups to bring the tally to 43-40 in favor of the Pioneers. Despite generating a number of scoring opportunities, New Paltz could not even the score down the stretch, and William Paterson registered its largest lead of the night at the buzzer, as Dana Jeter found a wide open Jewell Palmer underneath the basket, and Palmer drained an easy bucket.
New Paltz travels to Medford, Mass., on Saturday, Dec. 11, to face a strong non-conference foe in Tufts University. The opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
