Hawks Prevail over Lakers; "Pink Zone" a Success

Box Score NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz women's basketball team defeated the Lakers of Oswego by a score of 59-44.  The Women's Basketball Coaches Association “Pink Zone” was in full effect tonight as players wore pink shoelaces during the contest supporting breast cancer awareness.

 

Senior forward Carly Minehan led the Hawks with 13 points, eight rebounds, and one block.  Senior guard Nicole Sarcone and sophomore guard Caitlin Irwin each added eight points apiece.  Sarcone dished out eight assists and had three steals as the Hawks improve to 15-9 overall and 12-5 in the SUNYAC. 

 

Kayla Ryan led the Lakers with 10 points and Colleen McCready scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds and had a game-high three blocks.  Oswego falls to 12-11 overall and 9-7 in the SUNYAC.    

 

Minehan scored the first basket of the game for the Hawks who came out strong starting the contest on a 9-2 run.  Minehan had four of the nine points and senior guard Kristen Caban added a three-pointer to set the tone.  The Lakers came within three with 12 minutes, 28 seconds remaining.  The Hawks responded with a 9-4 run with eight minutes, 27 seconds left. Senior guard Abbey DeRossi started it all with a three-pointer scoring five of the nine points.  The Hawks finished the first half with a statement scoring the last seven points.  In the paint, the Hawks outscored the Lakers 14-10 and the Hawks bench outscored the Lakers 10-4. 

 

In the second half, the Hawks came out with fire as they went on an 11-3 run increasing their advantage to 19 points.  Sarcone and senior guard Maggie Farrell each hit a three-pointer to give the Hawks momentum on the run.  The Lakers chipped away the last few minutes going on an 11-6 run but came up short, making it a final score of 59-44.

 

The Hawks return to the hardwood Friday against Oneonta at 6 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
