CORTLAND, NY- Alexandra McCullough led five Hawk players in double-figures with a career-high 25 points and five rebounds in a 82-79 (4OT) win as the Hawks improve to 18-9 overall and will square off against the winner of #1 Cortland and #4 Geneseo at 4 p.m. tomorrow in Corey Gym. The Hawks forced 37 turnovers in the game and overcame a slow start to advance to their first SUNYAC Championship.
Carly Minehan finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and Maggie Farrell chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds. Kristen Caban had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists and Nicole Sarcone had 11 points, five rebounds and a game-high eight assists.
Madison Slagle finished with a game-high 27 points and added eight rebounds. Erika Puffer had a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds and Samantha Szkotak had 10 points. Rebecca Bucci and Mary Kate O'Connell finished with six points and 10 rebounds a piece as Oneonta finishes the season at 17-10.
Oneonta jumped out to a 10-0 lead four minutes into the game and continued to build their lead to 14 at the half. “We have tough kids and they were not happy with they way they played in the half. We talked about being more aggressive and attack the hoop in the second half” said head coach Jamie Seward.
The Hawks did exactly what they talked about at the half, as they came out and put the pressure on the Red Dragons. The Hawks cut the lead to six with 11 minutes to go, but the Red Dragons score four straight to take a 40-30 lead with nine minutes, 46 seconds to go. The Hawks stepped their game up to the next level as they took a two point lead with a 20-8 run over the next seven minutes. Oneonta tied the game on Puffer lay-up and took the lead on a Slagle jumper with 56 seconds to go. McCullough sent the game into overtime with a lay-up with 12 seconds to go.
In the first overtime, Oneonta built up a five point advantage, but the Hawks never gave up and fought back. Farrell sent the game into double-overtime with a three-pointer with 15 seconds to go. The second overtime, it was the Hawks who built up a four lead, but Red Dragons sent the game in another overtime with a Slagle three-pointer and a free throw by Puffer. The third overtime featured another quick start by the Hawks, but only to see the Red Dragons send it to the fourth overtime on lay-up by Slagle. “I give credit to Oneonta, they made shots when it counted and they kept fighting until the end” added Seward.
In the fourth overtime, the Hawks held Oneonta to one field goal and McCullough sealed the win with three free throws.
