Kristen Caban led all scorers with 22 points on 6-of-11 NY-shooting from behind the arc, but Cortland was able to outlast the Hawks for a 51-45 victory on Saturday evening in the Corey Gym. The Hawks finish the season at 18-10 and Cortland improves to 25-3 overall.
Kristen Caban and Alexandra McCullough each earned all-tournament team. “This team deserves to have a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament because they have worked so hard all year. Jessica Laing recorded double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds and Jennifer Patten added nine points and eight rebounds. Neither team led by more than five points for the game's first 36 minutes.
New Paltz was up 14-9 with 13:14 left in the first half and 23-18 with 3:14 left, and the Hawks entered halftime with a 27-23 edge. Caban hit all four of her first-half shots, including three from behind the arc, in a 13-point first half.
Cortland took its first lead of the second half at 32-31 on a Jamie Piperato jumper with 14 minutes, seven seconds remaining. The Hawks regained the lead 15 seconds later on a
Carly Minehan jumper, but Patten answered with a layup at the 12:35 mark.
Caban's three-pointer and a Minehan lay-up put the Hawks ahead at 38-34 with 10 minutes, 21 seconds left. Cortland tied the game on two Laing free throws and a Mary Bruns lay-up, then took the lead for good on a Laing three-pointer from the right wing with eight minutes, 33 seconds remaining.
The Hawks pulled within three at, 44-41 on a
Maliqua Fisher free throw with five minutes, 12 seconds left, but Volpini sank two foul shots with four minutes, 30 seconds left and a jumper with four minutes, 15 seconds remaining to give the Red Dragons their largest lead at 48-41 at the 3:10 mark.
Caban's final three-pointer cut the deficit to four with two minutes, 47 seconds left, but Volpini hit a shot with two minutes, 27 seconds remaining. McCullough's free throw drew the Hawks within 50-45 with just over two minutes left, but neither team scored again until Jen Polan's free throw finished the scoring with 23 seconds left.
