POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The New Paltz baseball team gave up three first inning runs, but recovered with two big innings against cross town rival Vassar College Wednesday evening in a 9-4 non-conference win. The Hawks improve to 15-8 and are winners of eight of the last 11 and return to the field tomorrow against Ithaca College at 4 p.m. on Loren Campbell Field. Vassar falls to 6-15 overall.
Michael Perroness lead the bottom of the first off with one of his three hits and would later score on an RBI single by Devon Luongo. Sal Costanzo added an RBI single and Joe Castills drove home a run on an RBI groundout to the shortstop for Vassar.
The Hawks got on the board in the third with one run.
Joel Judson drew a one-out walk and
Clinton Boettcher ripped one of his two doubles off the center field wall to drive home Judson from first.
In the fifth, the Hawks took the lead 4-3 with three runs. Once again, Judson drew a one-out walk and Boettcher added another RBI double for the Hawks.
Steve Pinckney brought the Hawks closer with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Boettcher. Philip Paker gave the Hawks the lead on an RBI single down the right field line.
In the seventh,
Thomas Pinnola had an one-out single and would score on Parker's RBI double.
The Hawks put the game out of reach in the ninth with four runs. Pinckney and Parker had an RBI single a piece and Matt O'Neill had a two run single to give the Hawks a 9-3 lead.
Vassar plated one in the ninth when Perroness had an RBI single scoring Adam Murphy from second.
Judson finished 2-for-3 and scored three runs and Boettcher was 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI for the Hawks. Parker was 4-for-5 with one run and three RBI and Pinckney was 2-for-5 with one run and two RBI.
Judson (4-0) picked up his fourth win of the season on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits in five innings of work. He also struck out seven Brewer hitters.
Brett Harrison and
Tristan Greene each pitched a scoreless inning and
Chris Chismar pitched the final two innings.
Race Bottini (1-1) recorded the loss on the mound for the Brewers. He allowed four runs on eight hits and walked three in four and third innings. Zander Mrlik pitched three and two thirds innings and allowed one run on two hits and Max Frankel was roughed up in two thirds of an inning. He was rocked for four runs on three hits and walking one.
