Chismar Fans 20 in Win over Oswego

NEW PALTZ, NY- Freshman pitcher Chris Chismar fanned a school record 20 batters in a 2-1 victory over the visiting Lakers from Oswego State Monday evening on Loren Campbell Field.  He is the ninth pitcher in Division III history to strikeout at least 20 batters and is the first to do so since 2003.  The Division III record for strikeouts in a game is 22, which has been accomplished three times.  He allowed one run on three hits in his first collegiate complete game.  He improves to 2-0 on the season and threw 92 of his 125 pitches for strikes, while getting 12 Laker batters looking at strike three.

With a doubleheader split, the Hawks upped their record to 16-12 overall and 3-4 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).  The Lakers improve to 13-9 overall and 2-6 in the SUNYAC.  The Hawks will return to action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against rival Mount Saint Mary College at Dutchess Stadium, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades.

Chris Chismar started the game with five straight strikeouts and had at least two strikeouts in every inning.  His only mistake came in the sixth inning when he left a pitch up and Kris Prikazsky hit his first home run of the season to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.  In the seventh, Chismar ran into trouble after a lead-off walk and an error by the Hawks, the Lakers threatened with runners on first and second with no outs.  Chismar buckled down, getting the next batter looking and a shallow fly out to center field for two-outs.  He got Dan Slate swinging for his 15th strike out to end the inning.

The Hawks scored their first run in the eighth when Clinton Boettcher led the inning off with a single and Matt O'Neill laid down an excellent sacrifice bunt to move Boettcher to second.  Boettcher would advance to third on the next batter as Steve Pinckney grounded out to the second baseman.  Boettcher would score on an error by the shortstop, after Mike Sherlock battled off four straight pitches to stay alive.

In the ninth, Joel Judson started with a walk and Thomas Pinnola followed with a single to left field.  Next batter Paul Merola laid down a bunt in between the pitcher and third baseman and was able to beat the throw to load the bases with no outs.  The very next pitch, Boettcher lined a shot but was robbed by the shortstop for the first out.  The very next batter, O'Neill took a 2-2 pitch into left field and Judson tagged up and scored the game-winning run for the Hawks.

Chris Paulicelli led the Hawks from the plate going 3-for-4 and Merola was 2-for-5.  Judson was 1-for-2 with one run and walked three times and Boettcher and Pinckney each had a hit a piece for New Paltz.

Andrew Lazzaro, Kane Share and Prikazsky each had a hit a piece for Oswego in the nightcap.

Andy Salvatore (2-3) took the loss on the mound for the Lakers, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits and striking out two while walking six in eight and two third innings.

In game one, the Lakers score twice in the third and three times in the fourth and fifth to take control of the game.  The Hawks lone run came in the fourth after Boettcher tripled to deep center field and scored on an RBI groundout by Pinckney.

Boettcher finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored and Sherlock was 2-for-4 for the Hawks in game one.  Pinnola also added one hit for New Paltz.

Oswego was led by Mike Tarnowski, who was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI and Bryan Stark was 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.  Rafael Cordero was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Dan Slate was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.  Kane Share added a hit and two RBI for the Lakers.

Judson suffered the loss on the mound for the Hawks, allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits and striking out three in five innings of work.  Brett Harrison pitched in relief the final four innings and allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four.

Oswego's Marc Peterson (3-2) earned his third win on the mound, allowing one run on five hits and striking out three while walking four.
