NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz softball team picked up two wins this afternoon against Oswego State. The Hawks defeated the Lakers 6-0 in game one, and 7-5 in game two.
In game one, Samantha Barra was 2-2 with two RBI and Erin Fitzpatrick was 1-3 with two RBI along with her first homerun of the season. Dale Cornelius was 1-3 at the plate and drove in two RBI.
Jillian Gallagher got the Hawks going in the first inning when she doubled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Victoria Kyle walked and Rose Dovi was hit by a pitch. Barra came to bat with the bases loaded and came up clutch as she smoked a line drive to center field which scored Gallagher and Kyle. Cornelius followed suit by hitting a two RBI single to put the Hawks up by four. Fitzpatrick came to the plate with one runner on and hit a bomb over the left field fence making it a six run advantage for the Hawks.
The Lakers had a chance in the top of the sixth inning as they had the bases loaded but came up short as freshman Gillian Davidoff got the Hawks out of the jam. Shannon Baker and Eileen Joyce provided the offense for the Lakers each having two hits.
Alyssa Oliva earned the win on the mound allowing no runs, tossing five innings on two hits and struck out seven. Davidoff came in for relief pitching two innings allowing no runs, on one hit, and striking out two.
In the nightcap, the Lakers put up two runs in the top of the first. The Hawks answered in the bottom half of the inning. Kyle singled and then stole second, Dovi singled and then stole second putting both runners in scoring position. Barra came up big again with a two RBI single to tie the ball game up.
The Lakers put up one run in the third and the Hawks responded by putting up two in the latter half holding a 4-3 lead. The Hawks did the most damage in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Elizabeth May doubled and teammate Gallagher did the same by hitting a double to deep left field scoring May. Kyle then hit an RBI single and Dovi showed off her speed by hitting a triple giving the Hawks a three run lead.
The Lakers managed to put up one more run in the top of the fifth but could not battle back from the deficit making it a final score of 7-5.
Jillian Gallagher earned the win on the mound for the Hawks. She tossed four innings allowing two runs on one hit and struck out five.
The Hawks improve to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the league. They return to the diamond tomorrow as they host rival Cortland, first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
