WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY- After falling behind 3-0 in the first two innings of the game, the Pinnola twins helped lead the Hawks back and eventually a 7-6 win at Dutchess Stadium Tuesday night against the BLue Knights of Mount Saint Mary College. The Hawks improve to 17-12 overall and return to the field on Thursday, April 22nd at 6 p.m. at Old Westbury. The Blue Knights fall to 9-18 overall.
The Mount took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Mike Umphlett was HBP to start the game and Michael Matuk followed with a single, advancing Umphlett to third.
Pat Sylvester got himself out of the jam with a double play, while only giving up a one run in the inning. In the second, the Blue Knights extended their lead to 3-0 after a walk and single to start the inning and Rich DeRosa lined an RBI single up the middle scoring Brian McNoble from second. Later that inning, Matuk was HBP with the bases loaded to give the Mount a 3-0 lead.
Joel Judson started the fourth off with a double into the right field corner and
Mike Sherlock followed with a single to advance Judson to third. Two batters later,
Clinton Boettcher took a fastball to right field, but DeRosa was unable to make the catch and Judson scored on the play.
The Blue Knights increased their lead to 5-1 with two more runs in the fifth. Umphlett singled to center and stole second and third on the next two pitches. He would score on two pitches later on an error off the bat of Max Tecce.
Matt Prescia also scored in the inning on an error.
The Hawks cut into the lead with one run in the sixth when
Steve Pinckney reached on an error by the shortstop and would score on
Michael Pinnola's RBI triple down the left field line and into the corner.
The Mount got that run back in the sixth when Umphlett singled home Billy Casey for a 6-2 lead.
The Hawks came alive in the seventh with five runs, lead by Pinnola's base clearing triple into the left center field gap. The Hawks two other runs came on a bases loaded walk by Boettcher and a Pinckney RBI single to right field.
Pinnola finished with two triples and a career-high four RBI and Sherlock also added two hits and score once. Pinckney was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Hawks.
Thomas Pinnola shut down the Blue Knights in seven innings of work in relief. He allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out four for his first collegiate victory.
Marc Soevyn recorded the loss on the mound for the Blue Knights, allowing six runs, zero earned, on four hits and walked two in two and two thirds of an inning.
