Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Fredonia

NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz softball team upped their conference record to 5-3 and 15-11 overall with a doubleheader sweep over Fredonia State Friday evening on Mary Gray Dean Field.  The Hawks took game one 6-4 and dominated game two in five innings, 10-2.  Fredonia falls to 14-13 overall and 5-7 in the SUNYAC.

In game one, Erin Fitzpatrick was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Victoria Kyle was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Hawks from the plate.  Five other Hawks recorded one hit.  After Fredonia tied the game at four in the top of the sixth, Fitzpatrick came up with a clutch two-run double to gave the Hawks the lead at 6-4.

Jillian Gallagher (4-2) earned her fourth victory on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out three in six innings.  Courtney Costello came in the seventh and earned the save while allowing one hit.

In the nightcap, Dale Cornelius was perfect from the plate going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI and Rose Dovi was 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.  Elizabeth May came up in the second with a two-run triple that opened the door for the Hawks.  The Hawks would go on to score two more in the inning for a 4-2 lead.  The Hawks put themselves in the driver seat with three more runs in the third en route to the 10-2 win.

Alyssa Oliva (6-3) earned her sixth win on the mound, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and walked two.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow on Mary Gray Deane Field at 12 p.m. against Buffalo State.  The game will feature the final home game for seven Hawk seniors.
