NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz baseball team fell to the visiting Red Dragons from Oneonta State Saturday afternoon on Loren Campbell Field by the scores of 11-6 and 11-2. The Hawks fall to 17-15 overall and 3-6 in the SUNYAC and Oneonta improves to 24-8 overall and 5-4 in the SUNYAC.
In game one, Joel Judson took the mound for the Hawks. The senior pitched in some tough luck as the Hawks committed three errors in the middle of a Red Dragon four run second inning. Oneonta went on to score one run in the fifth, two more in the seventh, and completed their scoring with four in the ninth as they prevailed over the home team.
The Hawks scored one in the second inning when freshman Michael Pinnola hit an RBI double which scored Clinton Boettcher who walked to lead off the inning. In the bottom half of the fourth, Michael Pinnola doubled again and advanced to third on Steve Pinckney's fly out. Sophomore Phil Parker drove in Pinnola with an RBI single.
The Hawks put up another run in the bottom of the eighth. Paul Merola walked and Boettcher advanced him to third on a line-drive single to right field. Michael Pinnola then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Merola. The Hawks put up three runs in the bottom half of the ninth on three hits and two Red Dragon errors making it a final score of 11-6.
Michael Pinnola finished 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Mike Sherlock and Boettcher both finished with two hits. Boettcher and Parker both plated in one RBI in game one.
Dave Filak earned the win on the mound improving to 6-0 on the year for the Red Dragons. Filak pitched seven innings, giving up five hits, two runs, and struck out nine.
Judson (4-2) recorded the loss on the mound for the Hawks. He pitched six and one third innings, giving up seven hits, four earned runs, and struck out six.
In the nightcap, Oneonta got the Hawks starter Chris Chismar for one run in the first, four runs in the third, one run in the fifth, and three in the sixth. Eight runs were earned for the right-hander.
The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the sixth for their two runs on the evening. Sophomore Mike Sherlock led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, and teammate Paul Merola followed with a single. Senior slugger Clinton Boettcher flied out at the wall in deep left field and Sherlock tagged up to advance to third. First baseman Steve Pinckney then singled home Sherlock while Merola advanced to second. Phillip Parker reached on a fielder's choice and Merola capitalized on a throwing error by the Oneonta shortstop to score.
Left handed hitters Merola and Pinckney both finished with two hits in the nightcap. Freshman Thomas Pinnola finished 2-for-4 in game two for the Hawks.
Oneonta's Brett Meservey (3-2) earned the win on the mound pitching seven innings on seven hits, two runs, and four strikeouts.
Freshman standout Chris Chismar recorded the loss pitching five and one third innings on 12 hits, eight runs, and nine strikeouts for the Hawks.
The team returns to action Wednesday when they host Vassar for senior day. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
