NEW PALTZ, NY- The Vassar College Brewers used four home runs to power their way past the Hawks on senior day by the score of 15-8 Wednesday evening on Loren Campbell Field. The Brewers improve their record to 8-23 overall while the Hawks fall to 17-16 overall. The Hawks return to action this weekend against Fredonia starting at 12 p.m. and a one-game set on Sunday at Brockport, game time set for 12 p.m.
Vassar used a three run first and a two run third to open a 5-2 lead after three innings. In the first, David Ringold got the Brewers on the board with a sacrifice fly scoring leadoff hitter Michael Perrone. Two batters later, Devon Luongo just homered over the reach of left fielder Mike Sherlock to make it a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks came back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Clinton Boettcher, scoring Sherlock from second after he singled with one-out in the inning. Vassar upped their lead to 5-1 in the third when Ari Glantz hit a two-run homer to center field, scoring Perrone on the play. New Paltz cut into the lead with one run in the bottom half of the inning when Sherlock doubled to left center field with one-out and would on another RBI single from Boettcher.
The Brewers put up five runs in the fourth to take a commanding 10-2 lead. It was capped off by a Ringold grand slam and a Perrone RBI single to left field.
The Hawks kept on battling scoring two in the fourth after Nick Monaco led the inning off with a single up the middle and would score two batters later on a Chris Paulicelli RBI blooper to right field. Zach Homerda would be the second Hawk to cross the plate in the inning after scoring on a groundout.
Vassar extended their lead to 15-4 with four more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Hawks would score one in the seventh and ninth and two in the eighth to make the final count of 15-8.
Joel Judson took the loss on the mound for the Hawks, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out two in two innings of work. Pat Sylvester, Tristan Greene and Chris Chismar held the Brewers to just one hit over the final three innings. Greene struck out the side looking in the eighth and Chismar struck out one in the ninth.
Zander Mrlik earned his first win of the season on the mound for the Brewers. He allowed five runs, four earned, on 11 hits and struck out two and walked one in six and two third innings. Zachary Prudoff pitched the final two and a third innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits and struck out one.
