NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz women's lacrosse team fell to Potsdam this evening on the Turf Field by the score of 11-10 in the final home game of the year for the Hawks. With just over a minute to go in the game, Sam DelGaudio's free position shot appeared to hit the back of the net in the top right corner, but was ruled no goal as Potsdam survived a late attack by the Hawks. New Paltz falls to 3-10 overall and 0-8 in the SUNYAC, while Potsdam improves to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC.
The Hawks scored first when
Brittany Hunt converted on a free position shot just 33 seconds into the game. Potsdam responded with two straight goals from Carly Richards and Sierra Langkammerer.
Bridgitte Hooker tied the game at two at the 20:18 mark, but Potsdam rattled off three straight over the next four minutes to take a 6-3 lead. The Hawks stayed strong, after a timeout by the Hawks, Hooker scored her second of the game to pull the Hawks within two at 6-4 with 5:54 remaining in the half. DelGaudio scored just under two minutes later and Hunt tied the game with 1:07 to go. The teams were tied at the half, 6-6.
In the second half, Molly Lehman-Lewis gave the lead back to the Bears with her 34th goal of the season. Julianne Rehain tied the game again at seven when
Brittany Bennett found her in the middle of the circle for the goal. Potsdam would get some breathing room with two straight goals, but Bennett and DelGaudio came right back with goals of their own to tie the game at nine with 16:28 to go. Aubrey Macintosh gave the Bears the lead with her ninth goal of the season with 9:14 left. Six minutes later, it was DelGaudio again with her fourth goal of the game and 24th of the year unassisted with 3:36 remaining. The game-winning goal came by Richards when she tallied her 43rd of the year with 2:33 left.
Richards led the Bears on the day with five goals and two assists and Lehman-Lewis tallied three points with two goals and one assist. Macintosh and Samantha Brown each added one goal and one assist a piece and Lankammerer and Maribeth Simmons scored a goal a piece.
Kaci Milligan earned her fifth win in net for the Bears, allowing four goals and saving five in the second half. Sarah Sweeney played the first half and allowed six goals and stopped five.
DelGaudio led the Hawks with four goals and Hooker chipped in with two. Hunt finished with three points with two goals and one assist and Bennett tallied a goal and assist.
Margaret DeLauter recorded the loss in net, allowing 11 goals and stopping 12 shots on the evening. The Hawks return to action tomorrow as they wrap-up conference play against the Oswego State Lakers at 1:00 p.m. on the campus of Oswego State.
