Lead Slips Away from Baseball

FREDONIA, NY- The New Paltz baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Fredonia after dominating the Blue Devils in game one by the score of 11-2 and let a late lead slip away in game two, 6-5 (11 innings).  With the loss the Hawks have been eliminated from the SUNYAC Playoffs.  The Hawks are 18-17 overall and 4-7 in the SUNYAC and wrap-up the season against Brockport on Sunday at 12 p.m.

In game one, Joel Judson pitched a complete game five hitter, allowing two runs, one earned and struck out 11.  Thomas Pinnola finished 2-for-5 with one run and two RBI and Phil Riccio was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Hawks.  Mike Sherlock was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI and Paul Merola was 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

In the nightcap, the Hawks led 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh and gave up three runs as the Blue Devils took the lead 5-4.  In the top of the ninth, Clinton Boettcher led the inning off with a triple and would score on the next batter as Steve Pinckney had an RBI single to tie the game.  Fredonia scored in the 11th to eliminate the Hawks from the playoffs.

Judson finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and Pinckney was 3-for-5 with one RBI for the Hawks.  Matt O'Neill was 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Hawks.

Starter Chris Chismar went six innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out eight.  Kyle Ochiuzzo recorded the loss on the mound for the Hawks, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and struck out four while walking five in three and two third innings.
